Temporary, Part-Time Faculty - DVM Program
The Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department (VBSD) in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) invites applications to apply for several part-time, temporary, non-tenure track faculty opportunities to teach up to 48% time in the PPVM program. Positions are supervised by the department head of the Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences Department. Teaching responsibilities begin August 2021 and temporary appointments thereafter will be on a semester-by-semester basis, depending on program needs and enrollment.
The successful candidate is expected to teach specific lectures or laboratories within the PPVM which includes the first two years’ curriculum of the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at the University of Minnesota (UMN). The PPVM encompasses the first two years of a veterinary curriculum whereby each year a cohort of 20 students will begin the professional curriculum and complete the first two years of Veterinary School at SDSU, and then finish their final two years of the DVM degree requirements at the UMN CVM. Lectures and/or laboratory teaching are expected to include the outcomes and objectives required for the UMN CVM first 2 years’ curriculum.
For these positions, the program is seeking faculty with the ability to teach specific lectures and/or labs within any of the following areas: clinical and/or anatomic pathology, veterinary anatomy and microscopic anatomy (histology), systemic (integrated) physiology, endocrinology and reproduction, genetics and genomics, biochemistry (cell and molecular biology), veterinary imaging, companion and food animal medicine and surgery, veterinary and public health agents of disease (bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology), veterinary dermatology, veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, preventative medicine, clinical skills, diagnostic lab techniques, clinical epidemiology and research methods, public health, or closely related disciplines.

The primary responsibility for each of these positions is to teach some lectures and/or laboratories in the Professional DVM degree program in a 1 or more specific areas of expertise within the first 2 years of the DVM curriculum while achieving the same learning objectives as the UMN CVM’s first two years’ curriculum.

- D. or equivalent degree in Veterinary Science, Biomedical or Life Sciences, Animal or Dairy Science, or related field; or D.V.M. from an educational institution accredited by the American Veterinary Association Council of Education.
- Ability to teach professional, graduate students.
- Essential skills in teaching, including the assessment of student learning outcomes.
- Effective interpersonal skills, strong written and oral communication skills, and organizational capabilities.
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness in a collegiate classroom environment or professional veterinary school.
- DVM with Board Certification and/or advanced degrees in relevant areas of the PPVM teaching program.

The ADRDL is also a member of the Food Emergency Response Network (FERN), FDA GenomeTrakr, FDA National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS), FDA Veterinary Laboratory Investigation Response Network (VET LIRN) and the USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN). The ADRDL includes Food Safety, Molecular Diagnostics, DNA Sequencing, Virology, Bacteriology, Clinical Pathology, Histopathology, Parasitology and Serology Laboratory Sections. Other units within the college include the Swine Education and Research Facility, Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility, Ruminant Nutrition Center, Sheep Research and Teaching Unit, and Equine Teaching Facility, all under the Department of Animal Science, and the Dairy Research and Teaching Facility of the Dairy and Food Science Department.
As the state’s 1862 Morrill Act land-grant institution, the work of the university is carried out on its main resident campus in Brookings, at sites in Sioux Falls, Pierre, Rapid City, and Aberdeen, and through Extension offices and Agricultural Experiment Station research sites across South Dakota.
