    Department Summary
    The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement, and achievement for the student scholar. UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development. UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.

    The FIG Program provides new UO freshman students the opportunity to connect with faculty and other new students through small 1-credit interdisciplinary College Connections courses and activities. The program is designed to promote the educational mission of the institution and build relationships with faculty and students to enhance the students' overall educational experience. Approximately 1,200 students and 60+ faculty participate in FIG courses each year.

    Position Summary
    The FIG Advisor is responsible for recruiting, hiring, and supervising more than 50 student teaching assistants - including facilitating weekly supervisory staff meetings and individual student appointments/check-ins. This position regularly makes independent program decisions, interprets and advises the FIG staff regarding University plans and policy, implements recruitment programs for incoming students, helps design and facilitate training workshops and other sessions for FIG assistants, and orchestrates several large annual events. This position also participates in UO outreach programs to local high schools. The FIG Advisor position has the budgetary authority to allocate funds for promotional materials, FIG Assistant events, and other programmatic needs. This position reports to the Assistant Director of the FIG Program.

    The FIG Advisor is a vital member of the FIG Program team and must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, creating a welcoming and professional atmosphere in the office. This person also must be culturally competent and possess the ability and commitment to work with students (prospective and enrolled), families, faculty, and community partners from diverse backgrounds.

    This position will be required to travel and work nights/weekends as assigned or directed. This position will require a valid driver's license and ability to obtain UO Driver's Certification.

    Advisors must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and the ability to create a welcoming and professional atmosphere in the office. This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of skills, experience, and education
  • Prior experience representing the UO or other institution as a student leader in a paid or unpaid role

    Professional Competencies
  • A broad working knowledge of student development principles
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g., low-socioeconomic, first generation, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals)
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong evidence of ability to set operational goals from strategic plans
  • Demonstrated high-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail oriented and time sensitive environment
  • Diligently attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing tasks
  • Recognizes situations that warrant initiative and moves forward without hesitation; resolving issues, problems, or situations
  • Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar); ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations
  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures

  • Ability to relate with prospective students via positive personal experiences from the student and campus community angles
  • Familiarity with the UO FIG Program and campus resources
