Position Summary:
The African and African American Studies Program at Eastern Kentucky University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Africana Engagement. The candidate will begin in August 2021 or January 2022.

We seek candidates from a variety of academic disciplines and interdisciplinary approaches. The successful candidate will teach courses in the African and African American Studies program (reporting to the Director of African and African American Studies for this purpose) and serve as the Director of the Center for Africana Engagement . Tenure home will be determined by the discipline of the successful candidate.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will
  • Teach coursework within the area of African/African American studies, with other teaching assignments to be considered depending on the discipline of expertise.
  • Create tutoring and mentorship opportunities for students.
  • Support the Director of African and African American Studies in recruiting and advising students in the program.
  • Teach a range of courses that include introductory and upper-level classes in the minor.
  • Coordinate activities and programs in the Center for Africana Engagement to offer programming that serves students in their academic, social, cultural and co-curricular development.
  • Demonstrate respect for the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Implement teaching activities and a diversity of teaching techniques, procedures, and resources, including the application of technology.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to provide quality programming, both in and out of the classroom.


Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants should hold a terminal degree in her/his/their discipline from an accredited or internationally recognized institution and should have:
  • Demonstrated understanding of the diverse and intersectional needs and concerns of Black/African American students and communities.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and planning student success and retention initiatives for Black/African America.
  • Demonstrated experience working on a college campus in a role that worked directly with students related to the personal engagement of dynamics of power, privilege and oppression across multiple identities (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, disability, religion, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with coordinating, planning and facilitating of social justice educational programming about topics related to intersectionality, power, privilege, and oppression across multiple identities (i.e., race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, class, disability, religion, etc.)
