Job Description Summary

The Department Chair of Natural Sciences assumes an integral role in the academic life of the College and is responsible for supporting the College’s mission and vision as they relate to teaching, learning, and student success. Reporting to the Dean of the Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Division, the department chair is responsible for creating a collegial environment that supports best practices in teaching and learning, professional development opportunities, and collaborations that extend student and faculty experiences beyond the classroom. The Chair engages faculty and internal and external stakeholders to: (1) develop, continually improve, and expand high-quality programs designed to address community needs; (2) encourage innovation and creativity in teaching and learning; (3) promote and encourage research experiences for students and faculty within the departmental disciplines; (4) work collaboratively with the Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Dean and Associate Dean to support initiatives that improve student progression, retention and completion; (5) provide guidance and feedback on curriculum and program proposals and modifications; (6) participate in classroom observations and evaluation meetings as part of the formal faculty performance evaluation process and provide written feedback; (7) support the development of stackable credentials and career badges within credit and continuing education programs and maintain existing articulation agreements and create new articulation agreements with postsecondary partners.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. A minimum of five years of progressive teaching experience in a Natural Sciences discipline (i.e., Biology, Chemistry, Physical Science, and Physics) in an accredited, higher education institution.
  2. Minimum of a master’s degree in a Natural Sciences discipline or related discipline from an accredited institution of higher education # Previous administrative, supervisory, and/or leadership experience.

  1. Previous higher education teaching and leadership experience
  2. Strong interpersonal and communications skills with individuals and constituencies representing a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural community
  3. Organizational, conflict resolution, and management skills
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in curriculum and program development and management
  5. Knowledge of the requirements of the accreditation agencies
  6. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, faculty, staff, regulatory agencies, or members of the community
  7. Ability to establish priorities and make difficult decisions among competing demands
  8. Ability to make decisions in a consultative and informed manner
  9. Skill in budget preparation and management
  10. Ability to write and implement grants

Job Requirements

  1. Degree from an accredited institution. (Unofficial transcripts must accompany application; official transcripts are required upon offer of employment.)

  4. Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.

Teaching Demonstration : Candidates who are invited for an interview will be asked to demonstrate their teaching effectiveness in a simulated classroom, laboratory, or other relevant pedagogical situation, the conditions of which will be determined in advance and shared with all candidates prior to the interview.

Letters of Recommendations can be uploaded during the application process or submitted prior to scheduled interview.

When the conditions permit, based on CDC and College Administrator’s guidelines, employees will be required to resume their work on campus as directed by management. This position is located in the state of Maryland.
