The Associate Director of Student Conduct/Student Conduct Investigator serves as the primary administrator for all alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct, Honor Code, and other University policies and procedures involving students. The incumbent manages the administration of the Student Conduct process, including the prompt, thorough, and unbiased investigation process for all alleged misconduct. The incumbent oversees educational programming related to University policies for students, faculty, and staff. The Associate Director reports to the Associate Dean of Students. The incumbent supervises all professional, administrative, graduate, intern, and/or student staff within the Office of Student Conduct.

Duties and Responsibilities

Manages the administration of the Student Conduct process; supervises all staff within the Office of Student Conduct; analyzes and evaluates alleged misconduct to make recommendations on the appropriate investigation, adjudication, or closing procedures; assigns investigators and ensures their utilization of the most up-to-date investigatory procedures and techniques; serves as a University Hearing Officer for any alleged violations of University policy, evaluating complex information in order to render a decision utilizing the incumbent's training, professional judgment, University policy, and federal and/or state law; investigates alleged misconduct, utilizing learned methods and techniques to draw informed conclusions, while applying the appropriate evidentiary standard; coordinates investigations with appropriate University and community agencies; prepares written report of investigation findings, which include all pertinent facts, information, and evidence; oversees and facilities educational programming related to the Student Code of Conduct, Honor Code, and other University policies and procedures for students, faculty, and staff; provides training for faculty, staff, and students on verbal de-escalation, crisis prevention, and crisis response; responds to inquiries from students, faculty, staff, parents, and members of the community, as well as assist with managing community members of concern; serves as the representative for the Office of Student Conduct on the Case Assessment, Review, and Evaluation (CARE) Teams for Students of Concern (SOC), Behavioral Intervention (BIT), and Threat Assessment (TAT); Sexual Misconduct Response Team (SRT); and SHSADDVS Education Committee; serves as the on-call Dean of Students’ staff member on a rotating basis; and performs other Office, Department, Division, and/or University duties as assigned.

• Strong skills in the areas of conflict resolution, problem solving techniques, interviewing and investigation

• Strong analytical skills and the ability to assess and negotiate complex, highly sensitive situations

• Exceptional critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate resolution of difficult challenges, including the ability to handle complex issues of extreme sensitivity

• Skill in writing concise, logical, analytical reports to convey complex issues

• Ability to maintain neutrality and work under stress

• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and success in working with diverse constituencies, both domestic and international

• Strong and effective interpersonal skills; ability to listen well and demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for individual needs

• Ability to work as part of a University-wide community to resolve complaints in a neutral and sensitive manner

• Ability to establish and maintain professional and productive working relationships with staff at all levels at the University

• Ability to read and interpret complex legal documents to evaluate their impact on University policy and procedures

• Working knowledge of nondiscrimination laws and compliance regulations including Title IX, due process protections as they apply to Student Conduct proceedings, the Clery Act, VAWA and FERPA

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree; two or three years of relevant experience in a college or university conduct process, administrative, civil rights, or law investigations, or other related field.

Preferred Qualifications: Doctoral degree; four or more years of relevant experience in a college of university conduct process, administrative, civil rights, or law investigations, or other related field; significant experience conducting investigations alleging discrimination based on sex, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, and sexual violence; demonstrated experience working with individuals who may be in distress and/or handling difficult interactions; demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (staff, students, faculty, parents, administrators) with diplomacy and tact; demonstrated commitment to working with multicultural populations, and an awareness of issues affecting women, minorities, and persons with disabilities; knowledge, experience, and training in handling issues related to gender-based violence; superior leadership and management skills, including interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills; and excellent presentation and training skills.
