Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs of the Lucas College of Business (LCoB) and receiving work lead direction from the Director of the Jack Holland Student Success Center (JHSSC), the Academic Advisor provides complex, consistent, and accurate student services support for the JHSSC with limited supervision in a high-volume and fast-paced work environment. Such services include: providing information and advising to current and prospective students through academic planning and successful paths to graduation, helping students find solutions for issues they may face, collaborating with relevant constituents to advocate for student needs, informing and referring students to relevant university services and resources, coordinating student success programs, events and projects of the JHSSC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional advising to students and ensure interactions are maintained at a professional level, responsible for entering advising notes after each advising session.
  • Provide complex academic advising for students on their academic plans and pathways to graduation and how to access resources and services to help them address any issues and enhance students’ likelihood of success.
  • Advise students individually and in groups on topics such as; preparing and completing the change/declare a business degree criterion, graduation application procedures, graduation date change, general education requirements, developmental studies/remediation, and academic probation, disqualification and reinstatement.
  • Investigate and resolve complex student issues using PeopleSoft/Campus Solutions and/or other advising systems. Issues may include online course registration, holds on students’ records, probationary holds, articulation issues, pre-requisites, etc.
  • Remain current with university policies, procedures, and frequently used forms from key student service areas (such as Registrar, Financial Aid, Bursars, Undergraduate Studies, etc.) and help students complete these petitions
  • Develop programming and present at frosh and transfer orientation sessions to welcome new students and provide them with the information to transition successfully into SJSU and LCoB.
  • Develop and participate in programs to highlight the LCoB and the JHSSC to the SJSU and local communities as well as feeder schools.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of university policies, major, GE, university and system requirements for graduation
  • Comprehensive knowledge of university resources and student services
  • Knowledge of the struggles/issues LCoB students face and current student success practices
  • Knowledge of student administration databases (CMS/PeopleSoft, Banner, etc.) and standard productivity tools
  • Knowledge of basic principles of individual and group behavior, and techniques and methods of interviewing students for the purposes of holistic academic advising
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal/written communication, presentation skills, and customer service skills;
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to recognize and refer students to appropriate student services and resources, and keep good working relationships with the units providing these student services/resources
  • Ability to provide high-quality student-centered services in a high volume and fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to coordinate and lead outreach activities and work with teams to develop and present outreach materials
  • Ability to coordinate teams of students, faculty, and staff and collaborate with various university units and external partners


Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Counseling, Student Affairs, or related area
  • Experience with project/program development and evaluation
  • Experience working in an advising office/center, preferably a high volume and fast-paced work environment
  • Experience working with students, staff, faculty and administrators from a diverse background
  • Experience with university and college advising policies and procedures




Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional III
Salary Range: $4,691/month - $6,683/month
