Position Description:

PURPOSE: Under the general supervision of the Senior Director of Enterprise Data Management, the Data Services Developer will work closely with other Data Services Developers, the Data Modeler, DBAs, and campus staff to build processes that move data to populate the campus data warehouse, and other campus, third party, or cloud systems. The Data Services developer designs, tests and documents ETL processes (extract, transform, load), and assists with development of campus business and data models. The Data Services Developer works independently on assigned tasks in close collaboration with other technical and functional members of the Data Services team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

ETL Process Development
  • Design and develop new ETL processes using campus ETL tools, or modify existing ETL to meet user requirements
  • Translate development specifications into ETL to extract the appropriate data from source to target systems
  • Participate in all aspects of system upgrade/test for ETL related tools and processes


SQL Development
  • Write SQL to achieve objectives (including but not limited to)
    • drive ETL processes
    • populate existing datasets
    • support data validation
Data Modeling
  • Consult with the data modeler and users on the model design specifications and underlying business requirements
  • Use data modeling tools to develop visual diagrams depicting business process and project requirements
Documentation
  • Participate in project plan development and updates
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for processes, systems and customizations

Other Functions: Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: Enterprise systems, applications, and technical standards; Linux/UNIX operating systems, database productivity tools similar to Oracle Enterprise Manager, SQL, SQL*Plus, PL/SQL, and SQL*Loader; data administration principles and data modeling concepts; technical and vendor documentation and ability to maintain internal documentation; system development life cycle and structured systems development concepts; system capability, design restrictions, and security requirements; client/server technologies, network connectivity, integration, configuration, and protocols. Ability to: apply consultative skills to assess user needs and communicate technology systems and solutions; maintain databases and middleware applications through performance tuning and applying patches/fixes/upgrades; develop program implementation plans, install software, and apply fixes; identify hardware/software interface problems; perform interactive debugging and to test and analyze program failures; use systems work flow and logic flowchart techniques; use project management tools.

Minimum Qualifications:
A basic foundation of knowledge and skills in database management, applications packages and programming, systems analysis and related programming support functions is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science or business, or equivalent training and applied experience. Working knowledge of industry standard applications programming languages and knowledge of standard systems analysis techniques.

Specialized Skills:
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science or related technical field AND two (2) years’ experience with integration services are required. Working knowledge and skills in SQL, ETL programming and systems analysis and related programming support functions. Working knowledge of data integration operations support/programming or demonstrated project management in data integration support operations. Additional experience, which has demonstrated the requisite skills/abilities, may be substituted for required education on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge of ETL programming languages and protocols. Experience creating data sources from enterprise systems and/or other applications. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above. Exceptional demonstrated working knowledge of SQL, and technical literacy in ETL concepts and processes. Exceptional ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a professional, persuasive, and tactful manner, and establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships within a diverse, academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in higher education. Working knowledge of enterprise systems, i.e. Student Administration, Financials, Human Resource, Extended Ed, and/or Data Warehouse systems and development. Additional technical skills including experience with Oracle/PeopleSoft tools, technology and architecture, Experience with ETL tools, data warehouse and data marts as they pertain to business intelligence, knowledge of Oracle Business Intelligence Applications and middleware technologies. Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMB’sVision.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time.

May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.

There are components of this job which are deemed essential on campus. This position will primarily work on the main campus, with occasional work from home. This position requires working on campus with students. The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority. In the fall, students, faculty, staff, and the community can expect that masks will be required and that the appropriate degree of social distancing will be in place in all areas based on evolving guidance. Additionally, all students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to be vaccinated before coming to campus.
