The IEP Foundation Year Program College Essay Coaches are responsible for meeting one-on-one, in-person with pre-University students (recent high school graduates) in a foundation year program for gifted and sponsored students from Saudi Arabia. This program is administered jointly by NC State’s Global Training Initiative (GTI) and Intensive English Program (IEP). This position is housed in the IEP and will report to the IEP Director. Successful candidates will possess: excellent written English skills, knowledge of the current college admissions landscape (STEM programs preferred), strong organizational skills the ability to guide students through the unique writing process required for writing university applications 3-5 (5+ preferred) years experience in the college counseling and/or college admissions field proven ability to work with a diverse international population. 

POSITION OVERVIEW: Coaches will meet in-person at NC State’s IEP offices in Raleigh, NC two to three times weekly with 2-8 assigned members of a gifted Saudi student group on a sponsored foundation year program. The Fall 2021 semester’s writing assessments will concentrate on college application essay writing; this will be the focus for the essay coaches. This is a non-faculty, “at will,” temporary salaried appointment. This contract runs from August 1, 2021 to January 20, 2021 (with a possibility of an extension or continuation). The tentative teaching schedule is as follows: August 9 – September 2: one 1-hour virtual session per student per week. September 15 – December 10: two 1-hour in-person sessions per student per week December 13 – January 20: one 1-hour virtual session per week, as necessary. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: include, but are not limited to: Coaching Foundation Year students in one-on-one sessions focused on writing assignments given by the English language instructor; Communicating with English language instructor and coaching students on specific assignment outcomes and individual student writing challenges; Meeting in person with each individual student assigned in two 1-hour sessions per week; Providing extensive assistance and support on the personal statement and supplemental essays/short answers. Maintaining and submitting attendance reports for coaching sessions on a weekly basis.

Number of positions available: 2 to 3 depending on number of hours candidates have available per week. Possible part-time or full-time. Start Date: August 2021.
