WSE Manufacturing Department seeks aTrainer (Machining Instructor) to provide laboratory instruction for the Mechanical Engineering course 530.254 Manufacturing Engineering, held each fall and spring semester.Laboratory topics include, but are not limited to, casting, milling, lathe, sheet metal fabrication, EDM, welding, and 3D printing which consists of 50% of the position's responsibilities. The other 50% involves providing training support for WSE Manufacturing, and performing all necessary trainings required for access to the self-service areas. This individual will report to WSE Manufacturing Manager.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Instructional Support Responsibilities (50%)

  • Maintaining the safety of the lab/shop environment and of the students.
  • Overseeing the preparation of all laboratory materials, components, and tooling in advance of each new semester.
  • Maintain inventory and perform purchasing of supplies & materials used to support the laboratory instruction.
  • Preparing the appropriate equipment and shop/laboratory space(s) before the start of each new lab.
  • Training the students on proper use of manufacturing equipment needed for each lab.
  • Instructing and supervising the students during each laboratory section.
  • Resetting the equipment and shop/laboratory space(s) after each lab has been completed.
  • Assisting in grading students’ laboratory assignments.

WSE Manufacturing Responsibilities (50%)

  • Assist in maintaining all equipment used for self-service including CNC Wire EDM, rapid prototype machines, Laser cutter, Milling machine, Lathe Machine, Drill press, Grinders, Sanders, Welders, etc.
  • Assist in managing supplies and material stock for users of the self-service areas.
  • Train students in the mandatory machine shop safety course as well as all additional trainings for individual equipment.
  • Supervise users within the self-service machine shop during daytime hours. The applicant must be available to answer questions and enforce strict safety protocols.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree or four years equivalent related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years experience with manufacturing equipment and machine shop operations.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required to train and instruct students on the appropriate operation of equipment.
  • Organizational, time management, and planning (short and long term) skills are essential.

Technical Qualifications/Specialized Certifications:

  • Qualified candidate will have a high level of technical skills for all required equipment. Working knowledge of CAD highly desirable.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational safety and health guidelines as they relate to basic shop use.
  • Operational knowledge of machining equipment including but not limited to EDM, CNC mill, drill press, shear, hand brake, welders, etc. required.
  • Thorough operational knowledge of personal computers.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
