Johns Hopkins Communications Department is looking for a versatile writer and online content producer to join the editorial team in the Office of Communications as aCommunications Coordinator. This person will play a significant role in supporting communications and messaging operations for the university’s central communications office. Under supervision, this person will contribute to coverage of university activities and will bring fresh ideas about how to reach and engage readers. This person will also help package and promote content in email newsletters as well as social media posts.

Note: This is a hybrid position with some in-office work required; some nights and weekend work will also be required at times.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the content team’s coverage of university activities by creating compelling person-centered articles, Q+As, and profiles, as well as important administrative and operational messages for the university’s news website, the Hub.
  • Independently produce and format written content in WordPress- and Drupal-based content management systems supporting various university websites and domains.
  • Recommend, create,and/or utilize videos, photos, and other multimedia storytelling elements to enhance content
  • Assist with the promotion of content via email newsletters
  • As needed, assist with the promotion of university content via social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Edit and approve calendar listings and/or announcements as needed
  • Other responsibilities as needed

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Two years of college coursework required. BA degree in communications or related field preferred.
  • Some related experience required, including writing and producing content for the web and working with web content management system(s).
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and/or education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and hold flexible hours.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • A person who has a track record demonstrating innovation and self-direction would be ideal for this position.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience working with web content management systems, particularly Drupal and/or WordPress
  • Experience with search engine optimization and/or content marketing
  • Experience managing social media accounts for an organization
  • Experience with HTML and other web markup languages
  • Experience compiling email newsletters
  • Experience editing photos in Photoshop or other software
  • Experience with metrics performance tracking systems, particularly Google Analytics
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
