The Department of Gastroenterology seeks aResearch Specialist II who will work under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Specialist II is responsible for molecular and phenotypic research on Barrett’s esophagus, a premalignant disease caused by chronic gastroesophageal reflux. The Research Specialist II will interface with other members of this lab. The qualified applicant should be capable of exercising independent judgment while carrying out the defined cellular and molecular experiments for phenotypic research on Barrett’s esophagus.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs laboratory tests and/or experiments under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator which include various assays, specialized techniques such PCR, real-time PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA extractions, RNA extractions, cell and organoid culture, mouse housing, and a knowledge of human genetics.
  • Follows established procedures or protocols with faculty.
  • Obtains, transports, and processes blood, esophageal sponge, endoscopic biopsy, and surgical tissue specimens from study participants.
  • Operates requisite laboratory equipment and instruments
  • Records data
  • Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Uses sterile technique to avoid contaminating experiments and cultures.
  • The position is responsible for ensuring program quality, and adherence to expected processes and project goals and timelines.
  • Determines patient study eligibility, obtain informed consent, and initiate patient randomization and enrollment.
  • Maintains good working knowledge of all assigned protocols and reporting requirements.
  • Follows HIPAA and IRB guidelines.
  • Collects, enters and compiles clinical data from a variety of sources.
  • Collects esophageal sponge, endoscopic biopsy, surgical and blood samples from research participants.
  • Prepares and stores specimens according to institutional and federal guidelines.
  • Gathers and documents into EPIC essential and accurate information about participant’s medical and medication history, patient reported outcomes, disease activity indices and laboratory and clinical data, after an appropriate period of training.
  • Processes samples using appropriate nucleic acid handling, digital and quantitative PCR assays,
  • Initiates and propagates organoid cultures, with subsequent manipulations including CRISPR-Cas9 editing, circular RNA construction, extracellular vesicle preparation, transfection, and animal model experiments.
  • Performs biomarker assays using digital PCR, quantitative real-time PCR, and methylation-on-beads
  • Maintains efficiency of clinic and research flow amongst multiple physicians
  • Prepares and submits annual renewal requests, amendments and adverse event reports with clinical input according to IRB and Sponsor requirements. Adheres to all protocol requirements to ensure the validity of the clinical research data.
  • Designs and creates protocol-specific case report forms as needed
  • Is knowledgeable of and complies with Good Clinical Practices, ICH Guidelines and Departmental Research Office policies.
  • Ensures accuracy and timeliness of data collection so that information may be used by the PI in planning for grant writings, presentations and publication.
  • Participates in design of upcoming studies as well as the preliminary and internal analyses of data, performs statistical calculations and assists with preparation of reports, scientific abstract and manuscripts related to projects
  • Designs study database and develops quality control procedures to ensure accurate and timely data input.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    Bachelor’s degree in one of the biological sciences is required. A minimum of two (2) years related experience specifically in PCR Work. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent degree) in related discipline.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years research experience and a familiarity with research procedures.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must adhere to guidelines regarding honest reporting of sensitive and confidential research and participant information.
  • Understands the importance/impact of data integrity in terms of participants, study results, costs, quality of service and scientific research in general.
  • Regular contact with researchers and collaborators requires the use of good judgment, tact and sensitivity.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
  • Proficiency in the use of standard software applications, databases, spreadsheets and word processing required.

Physical Requirements:

    Sitting in normal seated position for extended periods of time. Ability to use a keyboard and move about. Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
