As a leader on the Digital Team within the Division of Central Marketing, the Director of Web Development creates and sets strategic direction for web development on Syracuse University digital properties. The Director will lead a team of highly technical front- and back-end developers, platform architects and system administrators to make strategic decisions in the creation of high quality, world-class web experiences for all audiences, regardless of device, across the University’s digital landscape. The Director of Web Development will create, articulate and set web development standards and processes for the creation of services, features, and components used to develop and maintain the central web presence of Syracuse University. The Director will focus on integrations between existing systems and collaborate and work closely with the University’s ITS division. The position will guide their team as they partner with the UNIX, virtual enterprise technology, and information security teams to leverage the University’s Virtual Hosting Environment ( VHE ) for server operations and monitor emerging security threats, responding to vulnerability reports. Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent amount of education and work experience.
  • Eight (8) plus years of work experience related to web development management, web design, development and maintenance.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • Strong management and communication skills. A positive team player with a solution-oriented mindset.
  • Industry-leading knowledge and experience with fundamental web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Extensive experience with JavaScript frameworks such as Vue.js, Angular.js, and React.js.
  • Strong familiarity with server-side languages such as Python, PHP, Java, and .Net.
  • Familiarity with database technology such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle and MongoDB.
  • Extensive experience with accessible and responsive web design and development.
  • Experience working with content management systems including WordPress, Wagtail and Cascade.
  • Knowledge of enterprise platform technologies, maintenance and best practices.
  • Experience designing and implementing quality assurance testing procedures with strong attention to detail.
Responsibilities
  • Create and direct strategic priorities, lead team, and provide guidance on technical and quality assurance standards for the university to facilitate development of best of breed web applications and services.
  • The Director has authority and influence to innovate as well as set standards across the University’s digital platforms. Responsible for the infrastructure of web applications to ensure adherence to security, uptime, accessibility and code standards.
  • Direct, provide oversight, and mentorship to team of developers to create and implement websites, features, components and web services.
  • Manage development projects from start to finish ensuring on-time delivery and quality assurance standards.
  • Serve as subject matter expert influencing technical decisions and advising internal teams and campus partners.
  • Partner with analytics team to develop strategic approaches to web analytics, tagging, and tracking. Facilitate collaborative coding opportunities the University developer community.
  • Debug and troubleshoot website issues as needed.
  • Monitor analytics, logs, and reports.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends, tools and best practices.
