Senior Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional 1 - MR07 )

The Senior Academic Advisor will provide academic advising for current and potential undergraduate students in the BAS Applied Leadership program. When needed, the Advisor will guide the students to various campus resources that provide academic and/or psychological counseling. The Advisor will maintain relationships with academic departments and other campus constituents needed as resources for advisees, including transcript reviewers and admission counselors. The Advisor will conduct seminars/individual sessions with students related to PLA development and assessment. The position may have occasional evening and/or weekend work.

Duties and Responsibilities :

Academic Advising
Provide quality academic advisement to assigned caseload; cover designated office walk-in hours; counsel students on academic issues and program progress and assist students in identifying and overcoming academic difficulties through thoughtful educational planning; assess individual student needs, make appropriate referrals to other campus services and resources as needed, and aid students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals; develop, execute, and report on multiple advising campaigns each semester; and enter registration overrides for students within the department and distribute course information/registration codes.

Program Coordination
Work with Program Director to develop and maintain BAS: AL course offerings and schedule; identify potential issues and submit recommendations to the Program Director; coordinate daily program operations, maintain program student records, and prioritize tasks; coordinate admission, orientation, registration, defenses, and graduation procedures; create program forms and recruitment materials; and create and distribute program surveys and newsletters.

Prior Learning Assessment Coordination
Provide guidance to students who are seeking PLA credit, including portfolio development and guidelines; provide initial PLA portfolio review and assessment; and provide annual review and updates to PLA processes, including following CAEL processes and best practices.

Special Projects and Other Duties
Develop and maintain a strong communication line with academic departments and various support divisions; collaborate with administrative and academic departments as needed to improve advising process and services; serve on other university committees as needed; actively participate in regional/national organizations relevant to advising duties (i.e. NACADA, CAEL) expected to present and/or publish with related organizations on a regular basis; and other duties as assigned.

  • Must have excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively with adult students and faculty of all cultural backgrounds and experience levels
  • Ability to multitask and display a high degree of accuracy
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to thoroughly understand and abide by federal and university guidelines regarding student confidentiality requirements
  • Must have strong technical skills including being computer literate and knowledge of relevant software programs, such as Microsoft Office, student information systems (i.e. Banner/DegreeWorks), budgeting software (IRIS), and other related student service systems

Minimum Qualifications : Bachelor’s degree; and three years of professional academic advising/higher education experience.

Preferred Qualifications : Master’s degree the field of advising, counseling, higher education administration, or a related field; training/instruction experience; ability to use Banner both INB and SSB; and knowledge of student development and academic advising theories.
