Job Summary

As the Assistant Bursar, you will report to the University Bursar and support the planning and direction of all student account receivables and collections activities in the Bursar's Office. You will help manage the Bursar's Office functions including student billing/tuition and fee assessment, disbursement of federal, state, and SJSU financial aid and scholarship programs, and processing of student refunds. You will manage delinquent collection balances and reconcile several student account related financial activities. You will provide leadership and oversight to the department staff, and ensure customer service, assisting in the development of procedures, and maintaining regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee student service including advisement of students' financial obligations, financial options, financial procedures
  • Oversee the Queue Management System (QLess) for the Bursar's Office
  • Oversee postings to student accounts for Title IV and other financial aid
  • Manage disbursements and refunds following state and federal regulations and CSU procedures.
  • Coordinate refund requests with Accounts Payable, reconciles/resolve refund batch issues
  • Oversee collection activity related to student accounts—prepare reports regarding student accounts with outstanding balances to allow pre-collection actions to minimize delinquencies
  • Oversee the write-off of uncollectable accounts and the processing of Financial Petitions
  • Manage the enrollment cancelation process and track information for year to year comparisons
  • Reconcile special programs, e.g. B & N Voucher program, B & N First Day Solutions program and SIRF


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to manage staff; analyze operational and procedural problems; develop and recommend proposed solutions; handle a broad range of high-level and sensitive situations; interpret and apply applicable regulations and procedures; empower and motivate employees to improve performance.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or related field
  • 2+ years of full-time management experience in a financial setting


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education; such as in Bursar, Financial Aid or Student Services
  • Experience with collections
  • Experience with Oracle PeopleSoft ERP
  • Experience with Federal Title IV rules and regulations




Compensation

Classification: Administrator II
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
