A successful candidate will play an active role in FMU's existing academic and operational success. The Network Administrator shall have the primary responsibility to provide network administration and planning for all aspects of IT-network infrastructure, to include network equipment such as cables, hubs, switches, routers, servers, and clients, plus networking software like operating systems, memory backup, and email servers. This customer-centric role will also be in charge of installing updates to software and troubleshooting system issues.

Essential Duties:

Works under the direction of the Network Operations Manager/Network Architect; this position requires excellent technical, customer service, and organizational skills to support network operations for customer connections, administrative personnel, and staff. This position requires the ability to function successfully in both team and independent work environments. Provide emergency 24 x 7 on-call support on a rotating basis.

  • Provide Network, Hardware and Software support both locally and remotely for FMU.
  • Perform a wide range of network administration duties including installations, debugging, maintenance, upgrades, and general support for Cisco, Juniper, HP, Nortel, and Extreme network equipment.
  • Evaluate, test, and deploy all software and hardware upgrades to the networking infrastructure.
  • Maintains, upgrades and repairs network hardware systems, devices and interfaces using supported tools and equipment.
  • Monitors the health of the university network. Monitors the effective utilization of network address space.
  • Manages and maintains the data backup systems to include on premise and cloud backup systems
  • Maintains and/or increases technical knowledge through course work, workshops, seminars and readings.
  • Assists in the formation and implementation of security policies as it relates to the university network environment.
  • Monitors, maintains, configures, upgrades and repairs university firewalls to maintain security posture.
  • Participates in the disaster recovery planning process as it relates to the networking infrastructure.
  • Provides support for wireless network infrastructure which includes trouble tickets, monitoring, design, troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Configures, installs, and maintains university VoIP system and endpoints. •
  • Coordinates with remote corporate resources to facilitate and schedule systems configuration and maintenance of server operating systems, cloud infrastructure and related software to support business needs.
  • Assist in the configuration and deployment of core and peripheral network devices, which will require continuous learning of new devices (i.e. switches, routers, and long wired and wireless equipment).
  • Proactive monitoring of all network devices, services, and servers using a combination of tools to ensure high availability and SLA’s.
  • Collect and review network utilization data for capacity and planning purposes
  • Assist in developing, implementing, testing, and maintaining disaster recovery plans.
  • Interface with vendors for procurement & maintenance of all IT infrastructures.
  • Manage & troubleshoot network and Internet connectivity throughout the organization.
  • Work closely with the fellow tech team members to provide end-user support and issue resolution.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging tools and technologies.
  • Research, evaluate and recommend technologies to support business requirements.
  • Rigorously create and maintain documentation for all processes and procedures.
  • Collaborate with and support the work of other staff engaged in similar functions
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly meetings.
  • Coordinate with the rest of the MIS team to meet the team objectives.
  • Provide emergency 24 x 7 on-call support on a rotating basis.

  • Diagnoses and resolves complex problems in the university network core and building LANs.
  • Reviews and designs the network to provide a high-level of security to protect the institution’s assets and data.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relates to the position.

  • The successful candidate must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (master degree preferred), in Networking, Computer Science, Information Technology. Three plus years of progressive management experience, or related work experience (relevant experience - field preferred – and education may be considered in lieu of a degree).
  • Previous leadership experience and success in Enrollment Management is preferred.
  • IT Support and ITSM (Information Technology Service Management)
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in System/Web/Network. At least 2-3 years of experience working with networking equipment specifically, including maintenance and upgrades.
  • Significant experience working with Windows servers and network monitoring tools.
  • Strong knowledge of networking, including: TCP/IP, Vlans, Ethernet, SONET, switching, routing and routing protocols (BGP/OSPF), 802.1Q, and DNS.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours.
