This professional staff member reports to the Senior Assistant Bursar for Collections and is responsible for the collection of past due accounts from former students in accordance with Miami University’s accepted procedures and policies, and management of inquiries from students and families (written and verbal) concerning the validity of the debt.
Establish a relationship with debtors in order to collect
payment in full or, when necessary, negotiate monthly payment
agreements.
Manage the Perkins loan cohort rate by increased communication to
all Perkins borrowers who are entering repayment, as well as
provide additional counseling to delinquent students on the
available options to avoid default. This process involves automated
phone calls and emails to approximately 100-200 students per
month.
Manage the collection system to ensure that debtors’ files are
documented concerning actions taken and expectations for payment,
and follow up when necessary.
Work with the Ohio Attorney General to provide proper paperwork for
legal action; testify when necessary for court action.
Responsible for updates to accounts referred for collection:
Via telephone and written requests for transcripts;
Process payments for debtors by telephone;
Manage the process of ‘holding’ accounts when applicable;
Notify other departments to withhold services on past due
accounts.
Coordinate all third party collection agency placements:
Review accounts for referral to third-party collection agency
(average of 50 accounts a
month or $75,000);
Obtain collection documents for the Ohio Attorney General
placements;
Answer all inquiries from agencies concerning those accounts that
have been assigned;
Notify third-party agencies of direct payments.
Work closely with the Office of Student Financial Assistance to
ensure application of aid to students’ accounts and be proactive in
developing policies to work cooperatively in addressing student and
family financial challenges with the goal of finding satisfactory
resolutions.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Position requires a 2 year minimum of either Collection or Higher Ed experience
Desired Qualifications:
Experience with Ellucian Banner student and/or financial
systems, experience in a customer service environment, and Title IV
Federal Financial Aid requirements.
Bachelor’s Degree and one year of experience with collections or in
higher education
Applicants must have strong critical thinking, analysis and problem solving, and strong negotiating skills; must be detail minded, organized, and proficient in MS Word and Excel; must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills; must have the ability to handle numerous tasks, assign priorities, and handle confidential information; must have the ability to establish working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, university personnel, students, parents and outside collection agencies.
