The Center is located within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and has a mission to work in partnership with American Indian and Alaska Native communities to raise health status, self-sufficiency and health leadership to the highest possible level. This mission is accomplished through three core activities: 1) Research; 2) Training/Education; 3) Service. The goals of the behavioral and mental health prevention projects are to co-design and/or implement culturally relevant interventions and evaluate the impact on improving health and sometimes educational outcomes for Native American children, families and communities. The over-arching goal is to develop successful data-driven and culturally-informed surveillance and intervention programs for Tribal and other communities in which behavior threatens the well-being of youth and their families and limits their opportunities to flourish and lead healthy lives.

The Department of International Health seeks a Research Program Assistant II who will serve as 1) an evaluator for the Respecting the Circle of Life Teen Pregnancy Prevention study and 2) a facilitator of a behavioral health curriculum focused on nutrition and physical education. Position activities include recruiting, consenting and administering assessments to youth and parent participants for the Respecting the Circle of Life project as well as facilitation of the nutrition/physical education curriculum.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

    Represent the project in a community setting to initiate and maintain interest in the project. Attend trainings to fully understand the project and the informed consent processes. Recruit eligible youth and their parent(s) for the project. Administer informed consent and if necessary obtain assent from the youth. Administer the Respecting the Circle of Life pre and post assessments. Review consents, assents and assessments for accuracy and processing as needed. Work with the rest of project team on duties related to recruitment and consenting and participate in staff meetings to review project goals and progress. Update program logs and assist with data entry as needed. Assist with the other Center-wide programmatic duties as needed.
  • Complete training and prove proficient in the curriculum.
  • Deliver the curriculum individually or to small groups of peers
  • Deliver the curriculum to youth-parent dyads.
  • Provide referrals for youth and families to outside services and entities as necessary.
  • Work closely with the Program Coordinator to ensure the curriculum is delivered with fidelity and quality.
  • Participate in regular meetings with the Baltimore-based team through conference calls and videoconferencing. Facilitate timely and accurate evaluation and intervention delivery including:
      Ongoing completion of fidelity monitoring logs and form Meeting with study staff to receive feedback on intervention delivery Meeting with study staff to conduct and review data quality assurance checks Participation in evaluation and curriculum booster trainings as necessary
      Assist with dissemination of project findings in annual reports, at national conferences and in the scientific literature
    • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

    High School Diploma / GED. Two years of related experience. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

    General knowledge of sexual and reproductive health education and nutrition/physical education. Navajo speaker.

Special Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Must be comfortable completing invasive procedures including specimen collection (nasal, saliva, urine, blood) and other samples from participants.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers, including software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Other Requirements:

    Current driver’s license issued by the state of residence and good driving record required. Ability to travel. Some evening and weekend work will be required. This position will maintain background clearance as required by the employer and any collaborating agencies.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
