GI Sibley Memorial Hospital seeks a Clinical Physician Assistant to provide comprehensive and episodic care for hospitalized patients with gastrointestinal related issues at the Sibley Memorial Hospital. The ideal candidate has leadership skills, works well with others in a team, enjoys working directly with patients, has good clinical acumen, serves as patient advocate, and demonstrates responsibility and accountability with patients, family members, other providers and support personnel regarding patient care/and or unit operations. This individual will exercise independent, professional judgment and decision making on a consistent basis as well as will adapts to changes in technology and software to ensure efficient office practice. They will attend our didactic curriculum which includes weekly conferences, monthly grand rounds, monthly journal club, and monthly M&M conferences.

The Physician Assistant will provide direct daily patient care by assisting with admissions and performing history and physicals, consultations and follow up care including review of pathology, laboratory and imaging results, and progress notes and reports directly to the gastroenterology attending of record. The provider will also serve as one of the liaisons between the gastroenterology team and the primary teams and may assist in the discharge care of patients as well as post-discharge follow up care that can include calling discharged patients and ambulatory care physicians. Will provide scheduled on call coverage, to include nights and weekends, under the direction of the divisional clinical director. Will provide regularly scheduled inpatient coverage at Sibley Memorial Hospital. Working in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Gastroenterology physicians based at Sibley, with the hospitalists, with other specialty physicians’ groups and other departments as necessary within both Sibley Memorial hospital and within the Johns Hopkins Health system.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides comprehensive and episodic care independently and/or in tandem with physicians to new patients, follow-ups and consultations, as needed.
  • Proposes and implements medical therapy and treatment plans for patients, pertinent to both patients followed by collaborating physicians as well patients seen independent of an attending physician. This may involve telemedicine.
  • Requests and facilitates the scheduling of diagnostic tests and/or procedures as indicated by electronic notes/orders.
  • Communicates the results of tests and arranges for any required follow up procedures/tests/investigations of the patients.
  • Monitors patients while on therapy to evaluate them for side effects and expected outcomes.
  • Adjusts and starts new medications as indicated by patient condition.
  • Counsels and teaches patients and family members about the disease process and expected outcomes.
  • Makes referrals to other specialists as indicated by the patient’s condition.
  • Promptly enters clinic notes and other pertinent data into EPIC as this is integral to the proper care of the patient.
  • Communicates with and provides information to referring physicians.
  • Develops a synergistic relationship with both internal and external stakeholders to bolster referral volume.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with regional primary care physician’s practices.
  • Submits pre-authorization documentation and conducts peer to peer communication
  • Manage incoming patient referrals for the practice and triaging patients to appropriate timing, location and provider for clinic visit, reviewing the ordering Physician’s intake form for appropriateness and reviewing the completed history and physical to triage patients for location, anesthesia needs and pre-operative requirements for clinical procedures.
  • May be asked to assist in care of patients with physician either as a chaperone, assistant or patient navigator.
  • May be asked to manage EPIC in basket requests within EPIC for colleagues, physicians or a group.
  • Will fulfill assigned schedule for on call coverage and inpatient coverage.
  • Call coverage will include phone call coverage for the Gastroenterology service at Sibley Memorial Hospital during nights and weekends, in rotation, and under direction from clinical director. Call coverage not to include expectation or responsibility to come into the hospital to see patients in person on nights and weekends.
  • Inpatient coverage to include providing consultation service during the week days, including responding to all GI consult requests from the hospitalists in a timely and clinically appropriate manner.

CustomerService andTeamworkResponsibilities

  • Assist physicians with answering phone calls related to patient care.
  • Answer phone calls independently related to clinical patient care.
  • Is courteous and pleasant in person and on the telephone with coworkers, patients, visitors, and supervisors.
  • Utilizes proper telephone etiquette. Warmly greets patients and visitors. Verbally expresses appreciation when ending a conversation with a caller.
  • Handles and resolves patient complaints non-defensively and without blame to other employees. Seeks to satisfy a dissatisfied customer. Is generous in assisting and supporting others.
  • Documents all pertinent phone communication with patients properly in EPIC.

Computer KnowledgeExpectations

  • Operates personal computer to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases and other basic office support software.
  • Successfully completes all necessary EPIC training courses and training for application software for testing as needed and any other applicable clinical software systems or novel anal cancer screening devices.
  • Completes all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.
  • Other duties may be assigned by the employee’s immediate supervisor, division management or a healthcare provider in order to ensure an efficient office that will assist the Division in fulfilling its mission.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland and District of Columbia or other state where practicing. Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH and Sibley Memorial Hospital credentialing process is required prior to start date.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Additional Licensure and Knowledge:

  • Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) license.
  • FamiliaritywithregulationsandstandardsgoverningPhysician Assistantsin thestateofMaryland and District of Columbia.

Preferred Qualifications: Two (2) years of related Gastroenterology and hospitalist experience and/or Certification.
