Brief Summary of Work for this Position

Reporting to the department chair, this Academic Advising Coordinator position serves as the primary academic advising coordinator for undergraduates pursuing degrees in psychology. Directly advising hundreds of students per semester, this position provides hands-on guidance and direction for degree-seeking psychology students, and also works closely with departmental faculty, advocating for students and assigning faculty advisors for additional advising capacity as required. Student recruitment and retention, freshman and transfer orientation, and coordination of other aspects of advisement services in the department are other responsibilities for this critical role. This position serves as a liaison between the department and alumni, as well as overseeing collection, maintenance, and reporting of data regarding enrollment, retention, and alumni status.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in one of the following areas: psychology, education, counseling, or a closely related field, and professional experience working directly with students at the college level. Familiarity with detailed recordkeeping and strong written communication skills related to creation of memoranda, letters, and other documentation as well as two years of professional academic advising experience are also required.

Experience with Banner and DegreeWorks is preferred; experience with outreach and recruitment events and activities is preferred.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Psychology is the academic home for teaching and research within the life sciences. With nearly 700 undergraduate majors and 35+ faculty members, the department is one of the largest academic departments at UNCW . The Department of Psychology is a major contributor to the teaching, research, and public service missions of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. We offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs that convey a rigorous and up-to-date understanding of the concepts, principles and theories of the psychological sciences and provide our students with knowledge of basic investigative skills and methods of scientific inquiry and clinical practice. In our research function, we contribute new insights to fundamental psychological and neural processes, from general psychological principles, to social behavior, neurosciences, and clinical psychology. Where possible, we focus on psychological phenomena that impact on the quality of life in our region and the nation. In our public service roles we lend our professional expertise to individuals and organizations working for the improvement of the human condition. In a liberal arts education Psychology is of central importance. It provides the student with an understanding of neural systems from the level of the molecule through the behavior of people in large groups. For both majors and non-majors the study of psychology encourages exploration of personal as well as professional interests. We recognize that our psychology classes are particularly important for our non-majors; in their classes we emphasize the psychological understanding needed to function successfully as consumers, citizens, and parents in the 21st century. Degrees offered: The Department of Psychology offers the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in psychology. Graduate degrees offered by the Department of Psychology include the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Psychology and the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, or Psychological Science.

College/School Information

The College of Arts and Sciences is UNCW’s largest academic unit, employing 450 full-time and 150 part-time faculty members and awarding approximately two-thirds of the university’s academic credits. Ours is a comprehensive arts & sciences college comprising the arts, the humanities, the mathematical and natural sciences, and the social and behavioral sciences.

The College’s twenty-five units offer a variety of undergraduate majors leading to the Bachelor of Arts, the Bachelor of Fine Arts, the Bachelor of Music, and the Bachelor of Science. The College also offers a full complement of minors, including interdisciplinary minors such as Africana studies, Asian studies, Forensic studies, Latin America studies, Middle East & Islamic studies, Native-American studies, and Women’s and Gender studies, among others.

Applied learning is a hallmark of the student experience in the College of Arts and Sciences. Each of the College’s departments requires an applied learning experience as a part of the curriculum for its undergraduate majors. Examples include faculty-directed research, internships, service learning, and capstone courses and projects, all of which challenge students to integrate various strands of knowledge and to apply that knowledge to broader, real-world or real disciplinary situations. Through applied learning, students in the College gain direct hands-on experience with the skills of their major fields as an essential part of their preparation for life and career.

In addition to its undergraduate major and minor programs, the College is chiefly responsible for the curriculum that comprises the UNCW’s University Studies Program, through which all UNCW undergraduates gain a foundation in the liberal arts and develop the transferable skills essential for life in the twenty-first century. The College strives in its undergraduate programs and in its University Study offerings to nurture creative thinking, intellectual curiosity, diversity and inclusion, and academic integrity in students while providing them with a solid foundation of knowledge in their chosen fields. Upon completion of their undergraduate studies, College of Arts and Sciences students will have the necessary preparation for rewarding careers, advanced study, effective citizenship, and meaningful lives.

Graduate degrees awarded in the College of Arts and Sciences include the Master of Arts, the Master of Fine Arts, the Master of Public Administration, the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy (Marine Biology and Psychology). In addition, the nationally awarded Graduate Liberal Studies program offers a personalized curriculum of interdisciplinary study leading to the Master of Arts. Post-baccalaureate certificates in Applied Statistics, Environmental Studies, Forensic Science, Conflict Management and Resolution, Gender Studies and Hispanic Studies are available. Graduate programs in the College are designed to develop intellectual competence and to prepare the student for careers in business, industry, government, teaching or for further study at the doctoral level.
