Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Academic Coach empowers students to develop skills that will benefit their academic, professional, and/or personal success through positive behavior change. In addition to supporting students in University College with strengths-based coaching, the Academic Coach will coordinate coaching efforts in the University College and support evolving campus wide efforts around academic coaching, including connection with students in the colleges and schools. The Coach will support a caseload of approximately 50 University College advisees and be available for drop-in advising needs. The Academic Coach will report through University College and serve students in the Seahawk Success Center located in the residential community. The Center provides a collaborative approach to services and programs for first year, second year, and transfer students to increase retention and support students as they persist. The Academic Coach will contribute to student success through the following duties:
Provides academic coaching services for students who wish to improve identified academic goals, paying particular attention to students who live in the residential community
Develops, implements, and assesses student needs by developing a referral system to identify students who may benefit from academic coaching. Sources of referral may include but are not limited to, faculty, disability resource center, university learning center, dean of students case manager, housing, university college advisors, career center and etc
Plans, implements, and develops programs, group advising, group coaching and other identified interventions to assist students with the transition into UNCW
Assesses and identifies other areas for residentially based programmatic initiatives and collaborate with the Assistant Director of Transition Programs to implement other events as needed.
The Seahawk Success Center will operate Sunday night 6-10pm, and Monday-Thursday 1pm-10pm. In the first year of this role, the Academic Coach will maintain hours consistent with the Center’s operating hours. When the center is not open to students the Academic Coach will revert to similar hours as all University College employees which is Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- Master’s Degree and 1-2 year of work experience within in a related university or college setting
- Must have excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation & organizational skills
- Must have demonstrated ability to attend to details with a high degree of accuracy
- Must have evidence of previous success in working with, students, faculty, and families
- Must have proficiency with word processing, databases, spreadsheets, desktop publishing and web page maintenance software
- Must have experience offering a high-level of customer service
in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Master’s Degree in higher education, college counseling, student affairs, or other closely related field
- 2-3 years of experience in higher education, preferably with retention initiatives, academic advising, career counseling, or academic coaching
- Previous experience in higher education working with first- and second-year students and students transitioning to a college or university setting
- Must have experience with assessment of programs and services
and an ability to work independently to meet strategic goals
