Mission or Goal of Unit
As a research practice partnership between Richmond-area school districts and Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Education, the Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium ( MERC ) leads research and evaluation that addresses enduring and emerging issues in PK12 education with the goal of informing policy, building the professional knowledge and skills of key stakeholders, contributing to the body of scholarly knowledge, and ultimately impacting outcomes relevant to students, schools, and communities. MERC’s evaluation efforts involve partnerships with school districts as well as a wide range of state and local education-related agencies and organizations. The work generally involves mixed-method data collection and analysis designed and implemented with attention to the principles of community-engaged research. The work of MERC and the VCU School of Education has an emphasis on urban education and commitment to advancing access, equity, and quality education for learners from historically marginalized and underrepresented minority populations living in poverty and/or the educators that serve them. This Evaluation Coordinator position will work within MERC, and in partnership with VCU’s Office of Strategic Engagement, to coordinate and lead externally funded research/evaluation projects for educational programs in the Metropolitan Richmond region as well as in other parts of the Commonwealth and country. This position will be responsible for (1) designing evaluation studies; (2) staffing and coordinating evaluation teams that may include VCU faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students; (3) navigating relationships with evaluation partners and funders; (4) leading projects that involve mixed-method data collection, analysis and report writing; (5) pursuing contracts for evaluation and other external funding opportunities; (6) supporting the evaluation needs of the Office of Strategic Engagement; and (7) other research and evaluation duties as assigned. The position will also be connected to the Department of Foundations of Education within the VCU School of Education, which includes a Research, Assessment, and Evaluation doctoral track.
Research – The primary focus of the work of the Evaluation Coordinator would be to coordinate, project manage, and solicit MERC evaluations.
Teaching – This position may eventually include teaching responsibilities within the Foundations of Education department, although this would not be an expectation in the first year.
Service – This position may include opportunities for service within the Department of Foundations of Education and the School of Education.
-Experience designing, directing and conducting program evaluations using multiple methods (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods) and various data sources (surveys, interviews/focus groups, secondary data, etc.) in K12 education or related fields
-Experience working with stakeholders and evaluation team members
-Experience supervising and leading teams
-Knowledge of SPSS and/or other advanced statistical software
-Demonstrated ability to pursue external evaluation contracts and grant funding opportunities
-Strong written and oral communication skills
-Strong interpersonal skills
-Strong computer technology skills
-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
-Masters degree in education, research, or a related field
-Demonstrated work (e.g. practice, research, and/or scholarship) in advancing access, equity, and quality education for learners from historically marginalized and underrepresented minority populations living in poverty and/or the educators that serve them
-PhD in education, research, or a related field
-Prior work in PK12 public education
