Assistant Director of Transportation Services

Position Summary

Effective Transportation and mobility services are an important component of campus life, and reside under the purview of the Parking and Transportation Services department at the University at Buffalo. This position will oversee the Campus Transit Services contract (UB Stampede) comprised of 53,000 service hours annually, with service provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A new contract will be up for negotiation in 2022. The position involves contributing to campus transit planning, outreach to a variety of internal and external constituencies, fleet management, and leadership of members of our transportation team.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
  • Leadership, Management, Technical: Provide leadership and supervision to the team that delivers shuttle services on the three campuses; direct and indirect supervision of professional staff, clerical/customer service representatives, and a team of motor vehicle operators (shuttle drivers); develop route and schedule efficiencies; manage transportation infrastructure; monitor vehicle maintenance; utilize technology; report and track financial component of shuttle operation.
  • Leadership, Operations, and Planning: Oversee the Campus Transit Services contract (UB Stampede), comprised of 53,000 service hours annually with 24/7 service. Provide leadership to contract provider; manage, track and report on financial component of UB Stampede operation; oversee large conference and other special transit events; be available and responsive to evening staffing issues and on-call for campus emergencies.
  • Communication and Team Building: Serves as point of contact and maintains excellent working relationships with many campus departments; serves on various UB Committees; cultivates relationships with external entities including BNMC, Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council ( GBNRTC ) and Niagara Frontier Transit Authority ( NFTA ).
  • Planning, Sustainability, and Strategic Initiatives: Collaborates with the Director, and Director of Campus Planning (when appropriate), and UB Sustainability on planning efforts focused on multi-modal transportation options and matters of access. Presentations on transportation initiatives to various stakeholder groups will be required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree
  • 3 years experience in transportation, parking or related industry
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and staff development ability
  • Excellent communication (oral, written) and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products, specifically Word and Excel

Preferred Qualifications
  • Fleet management experience
  • Experience interacting with a broad and diverse population
