    Department Summary
    The department of University Communications is charged with telling the University of Oregon's stories to a broad range of audiences and positioning the university to succeed and thrive. The department utilizes and manages a comprehensive suite of communications tools, including public relations, branding, advertising, licensing, digital media, and more for the benefit of the university.

    Position Summary
    The Incident Management Team Communications Specialist (specialist) is responsible for providing communication support for the university prevention of, response to, and recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Working under the direction of the IMT communication leadership team in University Communications and in close collaboration with the Incident Management Team (IMT), the specialist will manage daily COVID-19 communication inquiries, write email updates, create content, and keep website and channels updated with the latest UO COVID-19 communications.

    The specialist will work collaboratively with IMT and across university divisions in support of IMT objectives and the UO's return to operations that fulfill its education, research, and service mission.

    The specialist will need to be proactive, show consistently sound judgment, and have a demonstrated ability to research, understand, translate, and communicate complex issues and institutional affairs to multiple audiences in a variety of media. The position must be able to work independently and effectively, across university-wide units and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a rapidly changing environment.

    Minimum Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field
  • Two years of public relations, public affairs, or incident management communications experience

    Professional Competencies
  • Excellent communications skills; demonstrated ability to write, edit, and produce content for spoken, written, and visual communications
  • Flexibility to shift direction quickly when priorities change, recommend creative solutions to problems, and deliver within tight deadline constraints
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, create, manage, and measure communications for web, social, digital, and other forms of media
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and set appropriate work priorities with minimal supervision over regular work activities
  • Discretion and ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment with multiple persons and projects, across departments, and with external stakeholders
  • Commitment to and experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and enhancing inclusion and equity
  • Ability to work flexible hours that may include weekends and on-call responsibilities

  • Experience in higher education
  • Experience in issues management and crisis communications
  • Experience with Drupal web software
