Department Summary

In support of the CSUSB Strategic Plan, the Parking and Transportation Department provides effective and efficient parking and transportation services that maximize value, meet customer's expectations, and maintains sustainability. The department operates under the umbrella of Public Safety Division and in conjunction with the University Police Department ensures the safety of the campus community. The units within Parking and Transportation department are 1) Permit Sales and Processing; 2) Alternative Transportation; 3) Citation Processing; 4) Business Information Systems, which includes budgeting and financial forecasting; 5) Parking Enforcement, and the initial review of Parking Appeals; and 6) Wayfinding and Event Parking. Parking facilities at CSUSB include two, multilevel parking structures each with about 750 spaces, and several surface lots with an overall campus total of about 8,300 parking spaces. These facilities cover the San Bernardino and Palm Desert Campus.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Parking and Transportation Services, and the lead directions of the Community Service Specialist Lead, the incumbent will have primary responsibility for providing public safety support, security services, campus community support and parking support. Functions range from patrolling campus lots, providing support and assistance to campus police, enforcing parking rules and regulations, traffic control during events, providing general information to the public; and providing escort and citizen assistance.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Patrolling campus parking lots to protect campus community and visitors from such hazards as fire, theft, vandalism, trespassing, and other crimes; assisting in the enforcement of campus rules and regulations; reporting hazardous conditions; checking, opening and securing campus facilities; and coordinating and testing campus alarm systems
  • Maintain effective, collaborative, working relationships with peers and others on campus to ensure effective delivery of services to the campus community and visitors.
  • Respond to motorist assists requests such as battery jumps or vehicle lockouts and resolve the issue with department-approved methods.
  • Give directions to campus destinations; provide general information about parking procedures, especially related to the display of parking permits and assigned parking areas
  • Providing traffic control and placing traffic control devices to facilitate traffic flow during peak hours, special events and emergencies, maintaining parking-related records and equipment.
  • Effectively dealing with difficult situations with tact and discretion, enforcing parking rules & regulations by issuing citations for parking violations, providing testimony in court, interpreting university policies and laws of the State of California.
  • Immobilizing and impounding vehicles that have violated California Vehicle Code regulations as per the campus parking policies.
  • Additional duties include other duties as assigned.

Employment Status: Permanent / Probationary & Temporary "non-exempt" positions (with the possibility of the full-time positions converting to probationary).

Location: San Bernardino or Palm Desert Campus

Current employees will be given preferred consideration.

Work Schedule:

Work shifts work potentially includes nights and weekends.

Key Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and the ability to learn how to use the applicable public safety-related equipment and systems are essential.
  • Working knowledge of applicable procedures and regulations related to campus security, public safety, and parking.
  • Working knowledge of alarm and radio systems.
  • Ability to detect and respond appropriately to potentially hazardous or crime situations.
  • Ability to observe and recall details and incidents.
  • Ability to act and resolve parking and traffic problems.
  • Ability to write standard incident reports in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of individuals including the campus community, public, and law enforcement personnel.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with tact and confidentiality.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma OR equivalent and three to six months related experience would normally achieve these entry qualifications.
  • Entry to the first level within this classification requires high school level reading and writing abilities and possession of a valid California Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience in security, retail, events management, or parking industry.
  • Experience in a diverse work environment, interacting with various groups of individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle difficult customer interactions with tact and diplomacy and arriving at a reasonable resolution.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.

Salary:
  • Classification Range: $2,912.00 - $4,501.00 monthly
