Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History

The Department of Art at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a one-year, non-renewable position at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor of Art History beginning August 1, 2021. Applicants with a PhD in Art History and at least one year of teaching experience beyond the graduate level are preferred. ABD candidates are also welcome to apply.

This position is open to applicants with specializations in all temporal and geographic areas, although candidates with a concentration in non-Western art histories are preferred. The ideal candidate’s research and pedagogy will demonstrate/represent a commitment to social justice, critical and theoretical engagement, and inclusivity. The position consists of a 4/4 teaching load with 3 preparations. The successful candidate will be expected to teach the survey courses in the history of art from a global perspective, focused regional and temporal surveys, and advanced seminars in their area(s) of expertise.

The Visiting Assistant Professor position at UTC Department of Art is intended to enhance the prospects for a career in higher education. The VAP will be encouraged to cultivate and/or sustain a professional research practice in art history in parallel with this appointment. The Department provides the VAP with the opportunity to meaningfully engage in academic culture, including opportunities to develop special topics courses, present their research, and engage the wider community inside and outside the university.

The Art Department at UTC is a NASAD accredited program that has 14 full-time faculty, six part-time faculty, a prominent visiting artist program, and approximately 275 majors pursuing BA degrees in Studio Art, Art Education, and Art History, as well as BFA degrees in Graphic Design, Painting and Drawing, Photography and Media Art, and Sculpture.

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess the following requirements:

• A PhD in the History of Art. ABD is also welcome.
• A demonstrated record of research, teaching effectiveness, and the ability to collaborate as a member of a team
• Willingness to engage in assisting the UTC campus in its ability to reach additional diversity, equity, inclusion and access goals as specified in UTC’s Strategic Plan
