Position Summary:

The Division of University Housing is committed to providing an exceptional workplace for its workforce of approximately 450 career staff members and over 1,500 students. University Housing operates nineteen residence halls across the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, providing a home to over 7,800 undergraduate students. We also operate three apartment communities, serving about 3,000 graduate students, academic staff, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and their families. In addition, we manage seven dining venues across campus, and provide conference group and youth camp housing throughout the summer months.

University Housing is divided into five main departments: Administration, Dining & Culinary Services, Residence Hall Facilities, Residence Life, and University Apartments. Whether we're launching new academic support services, testing out a new recipe, renovating resident rooms, organizing welcome events, cleaning our facilities, or inviting a new summer youth camp to campus, everything that we do is to support the mission of the University and fulfill University Housing's goal to be, "The place everyone wants to live."

Under the general direction of the Executive Chef, this position is responsible for operating the day to day bakery operations in our central production facility. This position will work closely with the Executive Chef, Unit Chefs, Assistant Director, Catering and Unit Managers. The Pastry Chef will be required to plan production, work production along side bakers / chefs and develop seasonal offerings. This position will also oversee the day to day operation of the cook chill portion of central production.

The Pastry Chef is responsible to create high quality pastry and desserts with standardized recipes and presentations. Also assist in production and maintenance of par stocks of pastry and dessert with proper rotation of products and maintain highest cleanliness and hygiene standard in the pastry and bakery section. This position will assist in leading the department to the goal of creating an exceptional customer service experience with extraordinary food in all service areas, while supporting Housing's mission. To achieve these goals, this position will effectively supervise and oversee daily floor operations in addition to providing supervision and development of front-line staff and student workers.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Culinary or Pastry degree from accredited college or university preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

In place of culinary or pastry degree, equivalent experience would be two years of supervisory kitchen experience in a professional kitchen per year of culinary school. Two year culinary degree would require four years of supervisory experience.

License or Certificate:

ServSafe Certification required.
Drivers license which meets UW Risk Management Standards preferred.

Additional Information:

Physical requirements: Periods of standing, walking, and frequent lifting of objects weighing approximately 50 pounds; frequent pulling and pushing of carts weighing approximately 200 pounds.

Primary schedule below. Schedule alterations and additional hours may be necessary based on operational need. This position has a work schedule based on the catering events and includes frequent weekends and evenings.

Hours for this position are Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm.
