Breeding and Genetics for Improved Nutritional Quality, Flavor, and Stress Tolerance of Vegetables
Location: Pee Dee Research and Education Center (PDREC), Florence, SC (https://www.clemson.edu/cafls/research/peedee/)
Appointment: 100% Research, 9-month

Advances in biochemistry, metabolomics, metabolic engineering, and genomic sequencing for high-value vegetable crop species are opening new and valuable research opportunities for plant breeding. This vegetable breeding and genetics position will have responsibility for conducting innovative research exploring genetic/epigenetic/quantitative variation in plants and the association with phenotypic variation in traits relating to human health and nutrition and tolerance to biotic or abiotic stress. The successful candidate should have experience in accelerating crop improvement through genomics-enabled plant breeding. Possible outputs would include vegetable crops with new nutritional and health-promoting functions or improved nutrient bioavailability, better understanding of the chemistry of flavors and texture, or enhanced tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress.

Because this position is associated with Clemson's Advanced Plant Technology Program, candidates should be interested in forming collaborations with other faculty with complementary expertise in plant, nutritional, and food sciences, animal nutrition, and biotechnology among others. Appointee will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized extramurally funded research program invegetable crops; release novel lines, germplasm or genetic stocks; train and mentor graduate students; and contribute to specialized courses, seminars, and team-taught courses, as well as to graduate training in plant breeding/plant genetics/genomics/plant molecular biology. We are seeking highly motivated individuals with strong research credentials. Strength in quantitative or metabolic genetics and bioinformatics is highly desirable.
