Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Biosciences, the faculty member will actively participate in the teaching and education of students in the College of Biosciences and provide reliable and consistent service to the University

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Co-teach the Introductory Bioinformatics Course
  • Teach two courses in Coding/Programming or Data Management and Analysis
  • Mentor students with research and project development and completion
  • Serve on thesis defense committees
  • Serve as an advisor to students in the one and two year MS program and mentor the same students in the presentation of their seminar presentations
  • Mentor students in research programs
  • Proctor exams
  • Contribute to the ongoing service needs of the department
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the organization
  • Represent department and the University favorably and in accordance with established Core Values and expectations


Supportive Functions:

  • Other administrative tasks (i.e., filing, preparing documentation)
  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems
  • Actively participate in team and University meetings


Qualifications:

  • PhD from accredited University preferred (willing to consider non PhD candidates with exceptional experience)
  • Coding experience with at least two programming languages. Experience with one general-purpose programming language (C/C++, Java, Rust, Python, etc.) and one high-level programming language or computing environment suitable for conducting Bioinformatics analyses (Perl, R, Python, Julia, Matlab, etc.) Strong familiarity or working experience with at least one of them.
  • Working experience with command line interfaces such as Bash, Powershell, etc.
  • General teaching experience with ability to teach these difficult concepts to students with little experience
  • General working experience (creating scripts, running software pipelines, performing analyses or building analysis software) with projects related to Medical Informatics or Bioinformatics
  • Willing to collaborate with researchers
  • Basic Understanding of Genetics, Molecular Biology or Medicine preferred
  • Experience with database management systems and database construction.
  • Prior academic teaching and research experience is preferred. Candidates who are passionate about teaching and enjoy a highly collaborative environment, interacting with faculty and researchers from their own as well as other disciplines are highly desired.
  • Experience directing a course and mentoring graduate students is a plus.
  • Effective organization and communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
