Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional 1 – MR07 )

The Academic Advisor provides academic advising for first-year students in various majors. When needed, the position will guide the students to various campus resources that provide academic and/or psychological counseling. The Advisor manages advising caseload through accurate record-keeping and maintain relationships with assigned academic department.

Duties include: Provides quality academic advisement to assigned caseload of first-year freshman of various academic majors during academic year and orientation; covers designated office walk-in hours and department email; counsels students on academic issues and program progress; assists students in identifying and overcoming academic difficulties through thoughtful educational planning; assesses individual student needs and makes appropriate referrals to other campus services and resources as needed; aids students in establishing realistic and attainable academic goals; develops and maintains a strong communication line with academic departments and various student support divisions; maintains student records including creating and updating accurate four-year degree plans for advising caseload; preregisters incoming first-year students, presents information sessions, and assists students with advising and/or registering for classes during New Student Orientation; and other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Must have excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively with students and faculty of all cultural backgrounds and experience levels
  • Attentiveness to detail and strong organization skills with the ability to prioritize multiple requests and handle them in an efficient and timely manner
  • Ability to thoroughly understand and abide by federal and university guidelines regarding student confidentiality requirements
  • Proficient use of computers and knowledge of various software programs

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; and a work background in a secondary or higher education setting working with students’ academic needs.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree; work background in a higher education setting working with students by providing advising services and coordinating support services; and experience with Banner and EAB Navigate platforms.
