Applicants must hold a current faculty position at the rank of Professor or Clinical Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia. The Assistant Dean for Research will enable the success of basic, clinical and translational researchers by working with CVM and UGA administrations to provide leadership, vision, and mentoring as well as playing a facilitative role through positive relationships with the CVM and campus-wide research communities. The Assistant Dean will coordinate and lead efforts in promoting innovations in research by improving cross-departmental, cross-discipline and cross-professional research collaborations. Responsibilities will include building research collaborations; assisting in the strengthening and promoting of research infrastructure; oversight for professional development activities for faculty and students related to research; program assessment; attend meetings and represent the CVM as needed; keep the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty and Graduate Affairs discretion ( ADRFGA ) and CVM informed of needs and successes related to the Research program; and additional duties as assigned at the ADRFGA . Oversight of Research Programs

Assist in building research collaborations’, management and improvement of research infrastructure, maximizing financial resources including extramural funding from federal and other sources, enhancing research communications and marketing strategies, and space planning and utilization. Coordinate research training programs for faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Additional duties as assigned include but not limited to: contract and grant conduct, technology transfer, research subject conduct (animal, human, biosafety, stem cell), integrity in research, research conflict of interest, research space, research resource development, and compliance issues.

Georgia Veterinary Scholars Program ( GVSP )

Direct the GVSP 12-week immersive research summer program for rising 2nd and 3rd year veterinary students. The program is sponsored, in part, by the UGA CVM, Boehringer Ingelheim and The National Institutes of Health. Organize the solicitation and selection of students and research mentors for the program with the NIH grant PI coordinator (currently Dr. Susan Sanchez). Provide students a current and comprehensive biomedical research experiences to enhance awareness of the importance of research in veterinary medicine and to encourage promising veterinary students to enter a career in research.

Grants and Grant Writing Workshop

Coordinate and publicize requests for proposals for grants such as “Grants on the Edge Program” and “Swanson Feline Research Award”. Manage the applications and review process by the CVM Research Committee when appropriate; arrange for scientific

editing, statistical assistance, peer review or other services to assist faculty in the grant writing process; and manage database of applicants, awards, outcomes (e.g. submissions, resubmissions, publications).

Promote and coordinate team building activities for training grant and multi-investigator grant submission by improving cross-departmental, cross-discipline and cross-professional research collaboration, including basic, clinical and translational research.

Coordinate all activities associated with the UGA CVM Office of Research and Faculty and Graduate Affairs intensive grant-writing seminars with “Grantwriters’ Seminars & Workshops”. Solicit and enroll participants in the seminar which is unlimited and is open to all faculty, postdoctoral scholars, interns, residents and graduate students. Arrange for each participant to receive one grant-writing workbook of their choice ( NIH, USDA, NSF, or Any Agency). Organize the competitive application process for faculty and select faculty (up to 15 faculty per year) with the “Grantwriters’ Seminars and Workshops” grant writer facilitator (currently Dr. Lauren Broyles) to attend a 7 month “Phase II” workshop. Monitor the progress of faculty with the grant writer facilitator, for the one-on-one grantsmanship training and preparation of a proposal that will be submitted to a federal agency or foundation.

Program Assessment

Develop and assess research program outcomes including the development of evaluation forms; maintain a secure database; report outcomes assessment data to the CVM Dean and Associate Deans, CVM Research Committee and Xitracs where appropriate; and respond to issues, concerns and suggestions raised by outcomes assessments to improve CVM research and training programs.

Steeve Giguère Science of Veterinary Medicine Symposium ( SGSVMS )

Co-Chair the SGSVMS with the Chair of the CVM Research Committee. The Symposium is a day-long event that showcases the breadth of research being conducted at the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. Coordinate with the other co-chair activities of the symposium including selection of the Keynote Speaker with input from the CVM Research Committee, organize the presentations by research trainees at all levels and provide first and second year veterinary students the opportunity to explore the scope of veterinary research and career opportunities while learning about the rigor involved in scientific inquiry (the Symposium is a required part of their curriculum).
