Working At NCVLI
Founded in 2000, the National Crime Victim Law Institute (NCVLI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational and legal institute located at Lewis & Clark Law School in downtown Portland offices. NCVLI’s mission is to actively promote victims’ voices and rights in the justice system through crime victim-centered legal advocacy, education, and resource sharing. NCVLI promotes crime victims’ rights in criminal, civil, military and administrative justice systems nationwide through litigation (in the form of amicus curiae, occasional direct representation, and legal technical assistance); education through publications and trainings (both in-person and technology-assisted); and public policy development. Job Summary
The Communications Coordinator will report directly to the Community Engagement Liaison and will work closely with executive and program staff to help develop and implement cutting-edge communications strategies across a variety of media platforms to expand and engage all of NCVLI’s audiences. The ideal candidate will have a passion for storytelling, demonstrated success in managing all aspects of internal and external communications, ability to create compelling organizational messaging and ensure a single, strong organizational voice, a strong instinct to think outside the box and experiment with new ideas, deep working knowledge of current digital marketing best practices, and a commitment to supporting those most often marginalized by public policies and institutional practices. The Communications Coordinator will be a mission-focused, process-minded, and detail-oriented collaborator. This position includes internal and external functions and duties.
NCVLI is funded primarily by government grants and contracts, and this position is dependent upon grant funding.

Facilitate Marketing and Communications (60%)
- Manage the development of an annual organizational
communications plan that will advance the mission by influencing
diverse constituencies.
- Aid in the creation of an annual organizational marketing plan
that will advance the mission by increasing the visibility and
salience of NCVLI.
- Deploy organizational communications and marketing plans
through traditional and new media channels.
- In coordination with other staff, develop videos for social
media and events using video technology platforms.
- Design compelling outreach and educational materials (for both
physical and online communications), including creating graphics,
viral campaigns, videos, and infographics.
- Manage website, including regular audit and update of website
content to ensure accuracy and develop relevant and timely content
for a blog; potentially develop and manage the launch of a new
website.
- Collaborate with NCVLI teams and maintain all aspects of
organizational social media presence; post regular and relevant
content on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn; update
content on YouTube channel as appropriate; and track, analyze and
report on all analytics.
- Collaborate with NCVLI teams to identify publicity
opportunities and legal issues to promote.
- Coordinate the development and dissemination of NCVLI’s monthly
newsletters and other online outreach strategies.
- Translate complex legal and policy work into plain
English.
- Maintain and uphold NCVLI’s branding and messaging guidelines
in all digital and printed materials.
- Oversee the maintenance and creation of mailing lists (print
and digital) in order to strategically engage segmented audiences
with targeted messaging.
- Analyze the effectiveness of digital communication through
tracking open rates, click-thru rates, and forward rates.
- Develop and compile monthly reports and web analytics to inform
content creation; set benchmarks and goals to track progress and
growth.
- Keep abreast of the latest digital trends to inform creative
approaches, as well as to aid knowledge sharing with other NCVLI
staff.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of communications and marketing
products, platforms, and activities and generate reports on the
same.
- Partner with the Executive Director and team members dedicated
to strategic outreach and partnerships to develop and execute an
effective media relations strategy, including developing press
contacts, collaborating with staff in the development of press
releases, media pitches, and Op-eds.
- Ensure collaboration on communications efforts across
projects.
- Monitor current events and trends to anticipate potential
public statements and necessary dissemination of information.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate's degree, certification(s), intermediate level of
previous training, or a combination of education and relevant
training/experience.
- Three (3) years of work experience in communications and/or
marketing and managing social and digital media accounts,
preferably in a nonprofit environment.
- Three (3) years of project coordination experience, preferably
in a nonprofit environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Expertise in developing cohesive organizational messaging and
year-long campaigns.
- A proven record of producing quality work within tight time
constraints.
- Knowledge of marketing concepts and ability to assist in the
creation, printing, and distribution of various materials.
- Basic HTML and website publishing, especially via LiveWhale and
WordPress (other CMS skills a plus)
- Knowledge of tracking and assessing Google Analytics and
re-targeting campaigns.
- Organized, detail-oriented, accurate, efficient, and able to
work independently and as part of a team.
- Advanced knowledge of multiple software applications including:
Asana; Adobe (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop); Google
(e.g., Docs, Sheets, Calendar); Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word,
Excel, PowerPoint); and online design collaboration programs (e.g.,
Canva).
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team to advance
organizational mission and voice and to perform a variety of duties
as needed in the organization.
- Experience working with or in diverse communities.
- Committed to issues affecting crime victims as well as to the
interconnected issues of racial, economic, and gender justice, and
fighting systems of oppression.
- Ability to honor and work with all identities and individuals,
particularly those who are underrepresented in the country and/or
at Lewis & Clark College.
- Commitment to and ability to articulate NCVLI’s mission.
- High standards of ethical conduct and confidentiality.
- Four-year degree or advanced degree (JD) preferred.
- At least five (5) years of work experience in related field(s)
(experience specifically in communications or marketing
preferred)
- At least five (5) years of experience designing and creating
websites (e.g. LiveWhale, WordPress)
- At least five (5) years of experience with graphic design
and/or art direction.
- At least five (3) years of Photography, video creation, and
editing skills
- Experience pitching and working with local, regional, and
national press
- Experience working in or with the nonprofit sector
- Experience working in or with the victim services field
- Experience working with the legal field
- Conversational exposure to multiple languages to aid NCVLI’s
continued efforts toward inclusivity.
