About the Opportunity:
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing the operational, instructional, and administrative activities in for the Department of Biology's teaching laboratory programs, serving both undergraduate and graduate students. This position reports to the Director of Academic Operations, and works with departmental staff to place, receive, and catalog orders for the teaching labs, maintain and oversee repair of equipment, and ensure safety compliance of all individuals utilizing the departmental labs. Additionally, the Laboratory Manager: schedules, supervises, monitors and evaluates all laboratory personnel; prepares and provides laboratory materials; provides daily instructional support to students and laboratory teaching assistants; assists part-time lecturers with the design, modification, and implementation of laboratory courses; serves as a primary point of contact for all teaching-lab-related issues including the mediation and resolution of problems as they occur; determines equipment purchase priorities; collaborates with departmental faculty and staff to address the needs of students and facilitate student success in the teaching labs.

A successful candidate will have excellent organizational and time management skills to effectively schedule graduate and undergraduate laboratory assistants into assigned lab sections, schedule weekly meetings with teaching personnel, place and catalog laboratory orders, ane prepare/provide all materials for successful completion of the labs. Strong interpersonal skills and experience working effectively with diverse populations are required to provide general supervision and guidance to part-time lecturers (PTLs), teaching assistants, student volunteers, and student empolyees working in the teaching labs. Occassionally, the Laboratory Manager will also assist in student recruiting by giving brief, informational tours of the teaching labs to prospective and accepted students and their parents.The Laboratory Manager serves as primary point of contact for all teaching-lab-related issues, including mediation and resolution of problems as needed, so strong problem-solving skills are required. Finally, a successful candidate will be an effective and respectful team-member to collaborate with departmental staff on matters related to the supervision of labs and student success.

The Laboratory Manager is a key position enabling the Department to successfully offer and implement high-quality laboratory courses for students across the College of Science and from other colleges within the University. This position ensures that all labs are run safely and effectively with trained and qualified teaching personnel. Additionally, the Laboratory Manager directly interfaces with undergraduate and graduate students across the University to facilitate their experiential learning and support their academic goals.

Responsibilities:
5 %
  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain teaching labs and instructional protocols in accordance with departmental and national guidelines with regards to safety and pedagogy. Serve as the Principle Investigator of teaching lab space. Interact closely with the department of Environmental Health and Safety and the COS Safety Officer to ensure and disseminate knowledge of government regulations regarding storage, collection, and disposal of chemical, biological, hazardous, and bio-hazardous waste, and necessary safety training of lab personnel. Respond to accidents and spills, and present reports to both the Department Safety Officer and College Safety Officer

    15 % Advising Students and Providing Academic Support: Educate students about lab policies and guidelines, academic integrity and University standards. Work with Director of Academic Operations, faculty, and academic advisors to ensure student success. Advise students on methods to maintain academic success and provide FACT reports as needed. Act as a liaison between students and student services, e.g. university/departmental tutoring, We Care, OSCCR, and the DRC while maintaining close communication with all parties involved. Maintain records of student grades for faculty and registrar.

    25 % Direct Management and Supervision of Teaching Assistants: Schedule teaching assignments; train teaching assistants and part-time lecturers in pedagogical techniques and comprehensive instructional content; manage weekly meetings. Ensure teaching assistants and part-time lecturers follow guidelines, and provide feedback throughout the semester including formal evaluations. Instruct and supervise approximately five student employees and volunteers working in the teaching labs.

    20 % Materials Procurement: Work with the Department Business & Operations Manager to provide lab costs and forecast expenses. Place and receive orders for the teaching labs, and maintain purchase records for reconciliation. Meet with suppliers and sales representatives to ensure pricing and availability. Oversee equipment maintenance needs working with the Department Business & Operations Manager for extensive repairs and space issues.

    35 % Teaching Lab Management: Oversee, coordinate, and implement all daily operations of the biology teaching labs. Work with the Department Business & Operations Manager to schedule and staff laboratory sections. Work with faculty and teaching assistants to design, implement and troubleshoot protocols and develop new curricula for the laboratories. Adjust and improve policies and guidelines as needed. Establish and maintain online course material, teaching resources and assessment tools for all classes offered. This applies to all laboratory sections offered by the department.

    Qualifications:
    Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred, in the biological sciences or a closely related field. Working knowledge of biological, biochemical and health science related equipment, laboratory experiments and procedures are essential. Minimum of 2-3 years laboratory experience in an academic setting with supervisory responsibilities required. Knowledge of OSHA, EPA and DOT Safety Regulations and biohazardous materials handling procedures is necessary. Teaching experience, 2-3 years in an academic setting and a combined experience of teaching laboratories and lectures preferred.
