Associate Dean of Students
The Associate Dean of Students is responsible for providing exemplary leadership and oversight to student issues that are primarily related to student advocacy and intervention. The Associate Dean of Students serves as chair of the Behavior Intervention Team and the Chancellor’s Coalition on Sexual Violence. The Associate Dean of Students is trained as a Title IX co-investigator, a Title IX Deputy, and a university conduct hearing officer. The Associate Dean oversees a minimum of two student life units and reports to the Senior Student Affairs Officer/Dean of Students and assumes other responsibilities as needed and as appropriate.
Minimum / Required
- Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, or another related field.
- Seven years of relevant higher education related experience.
- Experience managing student crisis situations.
- Experience in behavior intervention and threat assessment processes and protocols.
- Supervision experience of professional staff members.
- Demonstrated competence in providing quality training programs for various levels of staff and students, especially as it relates to student behavior, classroom management and crisis response.
- Policy development and implementation.
- Well-developed communication and public relations skills including the ability to engage effectively with faculty, students, families, and their representatives.
- Demonstrated intercultural competence and the impact on the student experience.
- Knowledge and utilization of software programs that manage student contact and intervention processes.
Student Advocacy, Intervention and Crisis Response 50%
- Serve as the primary point of contact in the Dean of Students Office for non-conduct related issues and matters (attendance issues, complaints, medical withdrawals, etc.). Provide leadership for development, implementation and administration of policies, procedures and protocols that impact student success and are under the purview of the Dean of Students Office.
- Serve as a Title IX investigator in issues of sexual misconduct and harassment.
- Serve as a hearing officer for academic misconduct and non-academic misconduct cases.
- Provide clearance for study abroad and related programs.
- Coordinate the student academic dismissal and appeal process.
- Coordinate the extenuating circumstance course drop process.
- Ensure accurate records management and follow up for student complaints received by Associate Dean.
- When appropriate, serve in an ombudsman and advocacy role for students needing assistance in navigating campus policies or difficult situations.
- In the absence of the Assistant Dean of Students, serve as the primary contact for student conduct issues.
- Communicate with faculty and staff members regarding students of concern.
- Document important contacts and conversations in appropriate data management systems.
Behavior Intervention Team Leadership & Management 20%
- Serve as chairperson of the cross-functional Behavior Intervention Team (BIT) and ensure compliance with all requirements of the protocols of the BIT.
- Oversee a case-management role to engage students of concern, reinforce behavioral expectations, and support follow-through with interventions recommended by BIT.
- Provide and promote training and on-going education as required and needed for BIT team members.
- Maintain accurate BIT records and provide statistics and reports as needed or requested to appropriate entities.
- Train appropriate members of the Stout community on the role and function of the BIT.
Campus Sexual Violence Leadership 10%
- Chair the Chancellors Campus and Community Sexual Violence Coalition and work to effectively implement all Coalition initiatives.
- Serve as the UW-Stout representative to any UW System Sexual Violence initiatives.
- Collaborate with University and community partnerships regarding education around issues of sexual violence.
- Assume responsibility for overall management of Title IX website including compliance with federal regulations.
- Provide campus leadership in best practices and national trends around sexual violence.
- If appropriate, investigate, write, and submit grants focused on sexual violence and college students.
Administrative Responsibilities 10%
- Supervise a minimum of two assigned student life units.
- Assist the Dean of Students with strategic planning and budget development.
- Oversee the Helping Hands Food Pantry.
- Ensure that Dean of Students website content areas, relative to areas of primary responsibility (student withdrawals, academic dismissals, BIT, sexual misconduct, etc.), are current and accurate.
- Ensure that all Dean of Students marketing, service, and program materials are current and aligned with university standards.
- Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs designed to meet a variety of university needs and interests.
- In the absence of the Dean, serve as the official voice of the Dean of Students Office and assume all responsibilities normally in the scope of responsibility of the Dean.
Professional Responsibilities 10%
- Remain professionally relevant by actively engaging in appropriate professional organizations.
- Travel as necessary to professional development opportunities, training programs, and at the request of the university.
- Participate in university and divisional committees and work teams.
- Represent the Dean of Students Office in the absence of the Dean or when requested or as appropriate at community and/or university sponsored events and programs.
- Perform other duties as requested or as assigned.
