Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of the Center for Inclusive Communities is an integral part of the daily operation of the Center for Inclusive Communities (CIC), within the Office of Student Involvement and Inclusion (OSII), as well as the Division of Student Life. The goals of the CIC are to enhance student flourishing by supporting the immediate and long-term success of Furman's historically underrepresented students; developing global leaders by inviting all students to critically consider issues of diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice; and growing co-curricular community engagement as a means of strengthening the student experience.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Inclusive Communities, the Assistant Director works to create a sense of belonging that will allow Furman's historically underrepresented students to flourish on campus, engage with The Furman Advantage pathway suited to their individual talents, and launch into lives and careers of meaning upon graduation. The Assistant Director provides leadership and support for the programs and services related to this student population, and specifically leads efforts to promote, educate, and increase awareness around diversity, multiculturalism and social justice concepts and issues. The Assistant Director will also develop experiential learning opportunities that promote an inclusive campus environment and expand student leadership development. The Assistant Director works collaboratively to align community engagement opportunities with expertise on campus to support active, thoughtful citizenship.

The Assistant Director collaborates with colleagues in the CIC and OSII to further strategic initiatives related to diversity and inclusion, new student orientation, programming, student center operations, student activities and student organizations. In so doing, the Assistant Director supports the mission of the OSII to create a vibrant campus in which students enjoy a broad experience within a close-knit community. Finally, the Assistant Director supports the learning outcomes of the Division of Student Life.

Job Description:

Responsibilities:

Experiential/Community-Based Program Management and Coordination

Develops and coordinates short-term, immersive experiential learning trips hosted during University breaks.

Collaborates with University stakeholders to develop pre- and post-immersion education, which explores historical influences on partner communities and raises awareness of current issues impacting constituents within the community, while fostering an appreciation of cultural differences to cultivate successful community partnerships.

Coordinates and conducts assessments related to community-engaged projects.

Develops and refines strategies for managing project documents, communications, community relationships, and community impact. Prepares project reports, grant proposals, and other communications to facilitate the sharing of information and progress with campus and community partners.

Social Justice Education Development and Training

Administers all aspects of the Dins Dialogue program, an interactive peer-facilitated diversity workshop series.

Develops and updates workshop curriculum for the Dins Dialogue program.

Selects, trains, and supervises Dins Dialogue student facilitators. Collaborates with CIC staff and campus partners to expand student development opportunities focused on racial and social justice education. Continues to identify additional training/workshop opportunities, resources and develop programs as needed.

Administers all aspects of the Safe Zone workshop program, Furman's LGBTQ education workshop series.

Develops and updates workshop curriculum for the Safe Zone program and facilitate individual workshops in partnership with CIC and OSII colleagues.

As opportunity allows, may co-teach seven-week, two-credit curricular dialogue courses led by Furman faculty; including course preparation, co-facilitation of class discussion, and assessment.

General Administrative

Advises and supervises students, coordinates educational programs, and generally supports Furman's historically underrepresented student population to foster a sense of belonging that results in retention, graduation, and institutional affinity.

Manages an annual budget ensuring all fiduciary commitments and budgetary obligations are met.

Assists in developing and evaluating assessment planning, strategic thinking and planning, learning outcomes, and goals and objectives coordinated with the mission and vision statements of the University, the Division of Student Life and the Office of Student Involvement and Inclusion.

Works closely with the Student Involvement and Inclusion staff in the implementation of strategic initiatives and departmental programs.

Assists with coordination and implementation of CIC-sponsored heritage and awareness month programming, including but not limited to, Hispanic Heritage Month, LGBTQ History Month, Native American Heritage Month, International Education Week, Black History Month, and Women's History Month.

Cross-trained as a designated school official (DSO) for Furman's F-1 degree-seeking international students.

Serves as a Level One On-Call Crisis Responder for the Division of Student Life (24-hour on-call rotation).

Serves on the Student Conduct Board.

Serves on other campus committees as assigned.

Conducts professional development activities, with approval by the Director, and maintain volunteer activities with a chosen professional association as appropriate.

Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Director in support of the goals and objectives of the department and the Division of Student Life. Relationships:

Routine contact with parents and the general public to exchange factual information and explanation of rules, regulations, practices or functions.

Responsibility for Final Decisions:

Reviews work to ensure compliance with procedures and deadlines.

Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps.Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures.

Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.

Reports To: Director of the Center for Inclusive Communities

Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.

Education/Skill Requirements:

Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or other related field required.

1-3 years of professional experience in the development and implementation of social justice and community engagement programming in higher education.

Understanding of student development and identity development theories and practical applications is essential. Demonstrated understanding of social justice frameworks and practical applications is strongly preferred. Demonstrated interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion issues and intercultural intelligence/cultural humility work is required.

Experience with student organization advising is preferred.

Must have excellent organizational skills.

Must have strong communication skills, including written and verbal interpersonal skills and comfortability facilitating in front of groups.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.

Customer service oriented.

Ability to interact with a diverse population and maintain a positive attitude in time of crisis.

Understanding of the importance of student learning outcomes and assessment preferred.

Work Conditions:
