Posting Summary
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university
and anchor institution located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of
promise, is seeking a Research Contract/Grant Specialist. Reports
to Assistant Director of Sponsored Research.
The Research Contract/Grant Specialist:
• Responsible for providing faculty and staff with advice and
leadership in the area of grants management.
• Providing management and oversight of externally funded
programs
• Reviews and interprets federal and institutional policy related
to grants management and participates in the development and
implementation of training and education programs that promote a
better understanding of the grants management process.
• Aids in protecting the institution from non-compliance with
sponsor policies and must be proactive in dealing with all aspects
of grants management.
• Supports the office’s mission to promote and facilitate the
growth of external funding to the Newark campus.

expertise throughout the proposal/grant life cycle, including
proposal development, budget creation and review, facilitation of
required compliance, and negotiations of grants, contracts, and
cooperative agreements.
Minimum Education and Experience
A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience and approximately three years of comparable experience in a college, university grants/contract office or department administrative office or in a government procurement office.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must have strong verbal, writing, analytical, organizational and
interpersonal skills. Must be able to handle multiple tasks,
deadlines and special assignments in a professional manner.
Must be capable of working independently and with a diverse group
of business professionals, faculty and staff. Ability to remain
poised under pressure, handle ambiguity, exercise mature judgement
and be flexible in unexpected circumstances.
Experience and knowledge of major sponsor policies and
procedures.
Also requires familiarity with Word, Excel and other business
software applications. Knowledge of electronic research
administration programs and of federal procurement regulations,
including both FAR and the DFAR, is desired.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Certified Public Research Administrator (CPRA) credentials are not required but are preferred.
