The Center for Social Concern seeks a Student Leadership Specialist who will report to an Associate Director and serve as a critical member of the Center’s team-oriented staff. The Student Leadership Specialist will be integral in the furthering of our commitment to collaboration, student support, innovation, excellence, and equity, diversity, & inclusion. The CSC seeks a highly skilled communicator and team-oriented leader to take on the important work of guiding JHU students through their personal, professional, and civic development.

The ideal candidate for this role will possess a deep passion for civic and community engagement and a love of student advising and student affairs programming. This role will work collaboratively with other staff to ensure successful implementation of recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and revision processes for student leadership programming, including immersion experiences (including Alternative Breaks and pre-orientation programming), CSC student service organizations, the Baltimore First program, the France-Merrick Civic Fellows, and additional student service programming throughout the year.

The CSC has a team-based structure, and the Student Leadership Specialist will serve as a member of several office teams, including training and assessment. They will also lead the office’s student organization team.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Program Development and Management:

The Student Leadership Specialist will provide programmatic direction for the suite of CSC programs relating to volunteerism, ensuring high quality experiences that incorporate high-touch training and reflection. Specifically, they will:

  • Create and implement immersive programming for JHU undergraduate students, with programs intentionally focused on high quality community engagement and/or alternative break models. Providing guidance and support to student coordinators and implementation of leadership training and community service.
  • Provide oversight to the CSC’s student organization network, including the implementation of training plans for staff and faculty advisors as well as student leaders and volunteers. This position will also serve as a direct service Category Coordinator liaison to the Student Leadership and Involvement Office who supports all Homewood Student Affairs student organizations. ,
  • Co-advise the Baltimore First program, with a particular emphasis on oversight of the cohort’s volunteer workshops and trainings.
  • Oversee the implementation of immersion experiences, including student leader recruitment, venue selection, transportation management, and the identification of volunteer and community exploration opportunities.
  • With the support of the office’s Events Team, oversee implementation of student volunteer events, including student service fairs and expositions.
  • Work in collaboration with the CSC’s Compliance Specialist (risk management), Community Partnership Specialist, and the Assistant Director of Communications to implement volunteer programming.

Student Advising:

The Student Leadership Specialist will be responsible for direct student organization advising as well as the mentorship for student interns and leadership boards. Specifically, they will:

  • Supervise internal interns supporting curriculum development and volunteer intake
  • Advise the Civic Engagement Allocations and Recognition Committee for student organizations
  • Advise 5-8 student service organizations a year as needed
  • Support the Baltimore First student Executive Board collaboratively with other CSC staff members

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of experience in higher education, nonprofit sector, or human services.
  • Background in student development and programming, experiential education, service-learning facilitation, nonprofit program management or other related field is ideal.

Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent judgement in the realms of program and project management
  • Excellent oral, written, and verbal communication skills
  • A demonstrated understanding and enthusiasm for civic engagement, community outreach, public service and/or volunteerism
  • A demonstrated capacity to work effectively using a racial equity lens with persons of diverse backgrounds and to foster sensitivity in student life and in the community
  • A strong interest in relationship building with varied and diverse stakeholders
  • Strong logistics management skills
  • A willingness to maintain a working knowledge of best practices in civic engagement and leadership development as it relates to their areas of focus.

Additional Information:

This position’s duties will require routine evening and/or weekend work. They will be expected to periodically represent the office on various internal and external committees. Duties may also require in-and-out of state travel or other.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
