Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Postdoctoral positions are available in the Department of Neurosurgery at The University of Maryland, School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, in the Translational Neuroengineering and Neuroscience Laboratory under Prof. Xiaofeng Jia.
The postdoctoral researcher will assist in planning experiments, methods development, and will conduct productive team-oriented and independent research. The position requires strong technical skills and the capability to do independent research. We offer multifaceted scientific projects, a role in a committed team, and strong scientific collaborations. We have an outstanding record helping trainees to build an excellent publication record.
Lab interests: 1) brain monitoring after cardiac arrest with therapeutic hypothermia and underlying mechanisms; 2) glycol-engineered neural stem cells to improve brain outcome after cardiac arrest. 3) Stem cell surface modification to promote nerve regeneration after peripheral nerve injuries (PNIs). The research projects of our team focus on these aims to investigate electrophysiological and cellular mechanisms of brain injury after cardiac arrest with therapeutic intervention such as stem cell therapy and target temperature management, including using in vitro and in vivo models for brain monitoring by EEG and somatosensory evoked potentials. Our primary goals are to develop new therapeutic strategies for brain injury after cardiac arrest and elucidating the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms. In the PNI project, we will enhance adipose stem cell adhesion and differentiation in vitro via stem cell surface modification, and improve nerve regeneration after critical-sized nerve repair to explore related therapeutic mechanisms.
The position is available with NIH funding for immediate occupancy for a 1-2 year appointment, contingent on background, experience, and performance. A successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, possess interdisciplinary skills and hands-on experience in conducting cellular and animal studies based on a detailed understanding of the neuroscience of brain disease, have excellent organizational and communication skills and critical thinking abilities, and be able to submit individual training grants and supervise junior lab members.
We are looking for a highly motivated, independent, and career-oriented research individual with an excellent publication record, with a Ph.D. in neuroscience, cell biology or a related field, or neuroengineering and with hands-on experience in translational animal models. Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary. Strong cellular and molecular biology and translational neuroscience (small animal surgery) training are required. Candidates must have first-author publications, a solid publication record, and proven research ability in two or more of these areas:
a) basic experimental or translational neuroscience research interests in ischemia brain injury or stroke, peripheral nerve injury,
b) stem cell or exosomes therapy,
c) In vivo electrophysiology, signal processing, or brain imaging (PET or MRI),
d) therapeutic hypothermia,
e) Other lab experience is helpful but not required: patch-clamp, brain slice cultures, optogenetics, and bioluminescence.
