Position Summary:

The Department of Radiology is seeking a CT physics faculty member to join the Imaging Sciences Section. This faculty member will work collaboratively with other CT physics and radiologist faculty members and staff on existing projects. They will additionally be expected to start and lead their own projects. The faculty member will have clinical support responsibilities and research responsibilities. The clinical support responsibilities will include joining our CT protocol optimization team. The research responsibilities will include supporting existing vendor collaboration projects, seeking additional vendor and government sponsored research, and supporting other research projects with expertise in CT imaging.

Principal Duties:

The successful candidate will provide clinical medical physics service in x-ray Computed Tomography (CT) in support of the CT imaging programs of the UW Health clinics, and associated outreach hospitals and clinics with service contracts through UW Radiology Community Division. Support will include performing acceptance testing of new CT systems and quality assurance testing of existing CT systems as required for accreditation by the American College of Radiology and the Joint Commission, providing advice on the purchase of new CT and ancillary equipment, aiding in the design of new CT imaging suites and performing shielding calculations for such suites, participating in the development of policies related to CT scanning for clinicians and researchers, answering questions related to patient dose, educating clinicians on the effective use of new acquisition and reconstruction applications and features, and assisting with protocol development to optimize image quality and dose utilization for clinical and translational research scans.

The successful candidate will also be expected to take a lead role in the development of a comprehensive set of CT scanning protocols for a variety of CT scanner types under an agreement between the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and GE HealthCare. This involves working closely with radiologists, CT technologists, other medical physicists and the manufacturer's applications and engineering support personnel to adjust scan and image reconstruction parameters for each imaging task and patient type to optimize image quality at the lowest practical radiation dose.

The successful candidate will also be expected to take a leading role in the start of an academic industrial collaboration as defined in a master research agreement between the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and Canon Medical Systems USA. This collaboration has a specific focus on interventional CT imaging and procedures utilizing CT, ultrasound, and/or electromagnetic navigation. This will involve working closely with radiologists, industry personnel, other faculty, students, and technologists providing expertise in imaging acquisition and reconstruction, workflow, and operator and patient dose calculations.

The successful candidate will also participate in other clinical service and teaching activities.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

PhD degree in Medical Physics or a closely-related field is required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Experience in providing Medical Physics support for clinical programs in Computed Tomography (CT) is desired. In addition, excellent communication skills are needed for interacting with a variety of CT users including technologists, radiologists, residents, fellows, and researchers.

License or Certificate:

ABR Board certification is preferred.
