Fixed Term (Renewable), Assistant Professor

Center for Bioethics and Social Justice

College of Human Medicine

Michigan State University

The Center for Bioethics and Social Justice (BSJ) at Michigan State University invites applications for a faculty position in bioethics, oriented toward social justice. This will be a full-time, fixed-term (non-tenure track), annual year appointment.  Duties will include teaching, curriculum development, research and outreach activities. Salary will be commensurate with experience. The initial term of appointment will be for one year with opportunity for reappointment. Review of applications will begin August 2, 2021. The appointment will begin November 1, 2021.

Founded in 1977, Center for Bioethics and Social Justice (BSJ) recently changed its focus to social justice-oriented bioethics, adopting a new name and mission in 2021:

  • To educate health professionals with skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to contribute to a world in which health practices are equitable, inclusive, and bolstered by conditions of social justice.
  • To research the nature of bioethics and enhance its applications to the pursuit of equitable, inclusive, and just healthy societies.
  • To engage researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and communities around shared interests in the attainment of a healthier and more just world.

With a brand-new mission in place, and more hiring planned, BSJ is seeking a teacher-scholar who has a passion for social justice-oriented bioethics to join us in building BSJ to reflect its new mission.

BSJ resides in the College of Human Medicine (the College) at Michigan State University. The College uses the Shared Discovery Curriculum— a cutting-edge curricular model which eschews traditional disciplinary courses to instead integrate all necessary science education, and prioritize immersion in clinical experience across the curriculum. BSJ is tasked with developing and teaching bioethics as well as general oversight to ensure bioethics content integration.

BSJ also wishes to bolster its growing research portfolio in social justice-oriented bioethics, including externally-funded research. A successful candidate’s research could either be in bioethics education, or in some other area of social justice-oriented bioethics. A successful candidate will also have an interest in contributing to the outreach work of BSJ, such as hosting meetings with local community groups, and facilitating campus dialogue around bioethics and social justice.

Qualifications include:

  • A Ph.D. or other terminal degree in bioethics or related field, so long as it includes a research concentration in bioethics
  • Experience in bioethics education and in bioethics curriculum development
  • Research expertise in social justice-oriented bioethics, including: equitable bioethics education; ethics of health disparities; health rights; or bioethics of caring for vulnerable populations

Interested candidates should apply to posting #714814 at careers.msu.edu

MSU is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
