Position Summary

The Associate Radiation Safety Specialist performs a wide variety of radiation safety related duties for the Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) Department’s radiation safety division. The specialist has frequent oral and written communication with professional staff (PhD, MD, Senior Researchers, Lab Technicians), clerical staff (secretaries and clerks), physical plant staff (cleaners, shop personnel, etc.), graduate and undergraduate students, most university departments and outside vendors. Thus, the specialist must communicate well with individuals and be able to independently recognize potentially unsafe conditions and act accordingly to correct the situation. The specialist reports directly to the Radiation Safety Manager ( RSM ).

The work assignments are primarily based on maintaining compliance with New York State Department of Health and other applicable state and federal regulations governing the use of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment. Currently, there are over 300 radiological workers in more than 100 laboratories and over 80 x-ray facilities in various buildings on three campuses. The RSS must be familiar with all aspects of the safety program.

Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Routine radiation protection inspection of campus radioisotope laboratories for compliance with EH&S and state regulations.
  • Assistance with the EH&S radiation safety educational programs.
  • Routine radiation protection inspection of facilities where radiation producing machines are used.
  • Radioactive material inventory control.
  • Provide emergency response – must be able to respond to emergencies outside of normal business hours.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree plus excellent customer service skills and good interpersonal communication skills are required. Working knowledge in natural science or engineering. A valid New York State driver’s license or candidate must otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation requirements of the position.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience in an academic and/or research environment. Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics or graduate degree in science or engineering with courses in radiation protection. Graduate training in natural science or engineering. Experience in the field of applied radiation protection. Practical ability with ionizing radiation sources, equipment, and associated safety instrumentation.
