About the Opportunity:
The Research Computing (RC) team at Northeastern University (NU) seeks a motivated, self-starting individual to be a member of our dynamic team as a Research Software Engineer. The successful candidate will be a key link between the RC team and the research community at NU, including faculty and students across a broad range of departments, as well as outside users and partners, in order to help them understand and utilize RC resources for their research and teaching.

As a Research Software Engineer, your primary objective will be to design, plan, and implement well-engineered software, visualization, and data services that supports and enriches research productivity and reliability. The successful candidate will look to evolve software development, visualization, and data services in collaboration with the RC team, Research Application Support (RAS) team, and users to ensure that the latest standards of reproducible research are kept. You will assist research groups in taking full advantage of Discovery, NU's 25,000+ core HPC cluster installed at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center, and work closely with the RC team to develop a long-term software strategy for the NU research enterprise, with a focus on minimizing risk and maximizing efficient resource utilization.

Responsibilities:

Technical Consultation
  • Regularly engage with NU researchers in the design, plan, and implement well-engineered software that enriches research productivity and reliability.
  • Build understanding with research activities through regular engagements.
  • Apply firm understanding of specific technology in develop custom solutions to meet researchers needs.

Communicate progress and participate in reviews with technical staff and senior management.

Software Development
  • Provide feedback on scope of work and project plan and track progress of regular milestones.
  • Build and maintain aspects of version controlled software code and custom data processing pipelines for complex environments.
  • Develop and maintain user and administration facing visualization tools and web interfaces to research computing resources.

Partnership and Collaboration
  • Work as part of a Research Application Support team of developers, security, and support professionals..
  • Collaborate with both the RC team and users to provide support for scientific software and system libraries
  • Provide regular communications to project leads with updates.

Documentation and Training
  • Work with RC and RAS staff to develop and maintain technical documentation, both internal (admin facing) and external (user facing) documentation.
  • Build internal code design and development guides for future contributors.
  • Develop, present, and maintain training sessions and workshops, both online and in-person, relevant to RC storage solutions and resources.

Professional Development
  • Participate in external collaborations (locally/regionally).
  • Attend conferences and workshops relevant to RC software and hardware to advance skills and stay current with emerging technologies.
  • Assist in developing and writing proposals to enhance the research enterprise at NU.

Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or related field
  • Minimum of 2 years working in a Unix/Linux environment (bash, CentOS, RedHat, virtualization, etc)
  • Experience with one or more common scientific programming languages (Fortran, C, C++, Python, etc)
  • Experience with one or more common parallel programming paradigms (MPI, OpenMP, Pthreads)
  • Experience working in a shared computing and/or cloud environments
  • Experience in the use of visualization tools (Tableau, PowerBI, Qlik, etc)
  • Experience in the effective use of version control software (git, svn, mercurial, etc)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience as a Software Engineer or Programmer at a technology company or research institution.
  • Experience with Linux system administration
  • Experience with cloud environments and development (Azure, AWS, GCP, etc)
  • Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Podman, Singularity, etc)
  • Experience with web technologies (Angular, Flask, HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc)
  • Knowledge of technical standards for digital data curation, mapping, visualization, 3D modelling, web delivery and archiving tools is a plus
  • Knowledge of user interface design
  • Experience with HPC storage systems and storage protocols (GPFS, Lustre, NFS, SMB, etc)
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies and remain current in developing trends in the scientific computing community
  • Experience with software defined networks, federated access between authentication providers, Science DMZ, and other access related concepts key to interactions internally and externally with partner institutions.
  • Experience with scientific research software and computational workflows
  • Experience prioritizing multiple projects and work streams in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to communicate and document clearly
  • Desire for continuous self-improvement and maintenance of skills through training.
