The University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Department of Family Medicine invite applications and nominations for the position of the Chair, Department of Family Medicine.

Developing and employing innovative approaches, Family Medicine’s mission is quadripartite: Provide high-quality patient care, conduct innovative research, equip future physicians and clinicians with the competencies required for patient-centered care in community settings, and to nurture the next generation of family medicine leaders.  The Department remains dedicated to evolving models for primary care delivery, building on the strength of our residency training programs.  The faculty provide comprehensive family-centered care in community-based family medicine practices, residency program health centers, and UPMC hospitals.  The Department’s commitment to teaching also includes educational opportunities for providers in family medicine in addition to medical student education.

The ideal Chair candidate will be a strong transformational leader and an outstanding clinician, educator, and scholar who will work collaboratively with the leadership of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh to continue and enhance the tradition of excellence in family medicine. We seek a highly collaborative, outstanding communicator who is committed to demonstrating the values of diversity, equity and inclusion with qualifications commensurate with appointment as a tenured full Professor at the University of Pittsburgh.  Strong interpersonal skills and at least 5 years of leadership experience, including financial acumen, change and conflict management, programmatic development and demonstrated strategic talents are required.  The candidate should be clinically active with experience in quality improvement or patient outcomes and experienced with incorporation of advanced practice providers to grow and support the clinical enterprise.  Educational experience with value-based commitment to training, mentoring, and advising all levels of trainees is essential.  Because of our collaborative atmosphere, a track record of success in transdisciplinary team science and population-based research experience will be valuable in this environment.  Knowledge of large integrated health systems is a plus.  We seek a servant leader with national visibility and dedication to serving as a leader in the local community.

Three of our eight ACGME-accredited family medicine residencies are amongst the oldest programs in the country, and our residencies support diverse fellowships including geriatrics, sports medicine, operative OB, and faculty development, among others.  The Department continues to expand its research portfolio, particularly strong in the areas of prevention, influenza vaccine research and contraception, with support from NIH, CDC, and industry and strong commitment to community engagement.  The Department’s clinical contribution to the mission of UPMC is a critical element in UPMC’s continued national hospital rankings in the U.S. News & World Report.  The opportunities for collaboration with our strong Graduate School of Public Health and the UPMC Health Plan will be an important resource and asset for a leader focused on innovative approaches to community health.
