Woodbury University invites applications for a full-time Participating Faculty (for a term of one or possibly two years) in the Public Safety Administration Department (PSAD), housed within the College of Liberal Arts. The following position has an expected start date of August 2021. Woodbury University makes appointments in anticipation of its enrollment needs.

We seek colleagues whose teaching, administrative, and community outreach experience demonstrate progressive application of criminological theories and practices. We are looking for a change-agent candidate who is sensitive to oppression, privilege, and discrimination, and who can foster innovative modalities to challenge inequalities and injustices within criminal justice systems. We are looking for an individual whose past experiences demonstrate a deep understanding of the cultural traditions of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and other communities of color as well as those whose communities who identify with alternative gender and sexual orientations.

This position qualifies University sponsored employee benefit plans and programs (e.g., group health insurance, life insurance, tax deferred annuity plan, sick, and paid holidays), subject to the eligibility requirements and conditions of each plan and program.   

The Public Safety Administration Department is a relatively new undergraduate program, just graduating our first cohort of students this coming fall. The PSAD major is an innovative program that broadens the scope of the traditional criminal justice degree. The degree focuses on both public and private safety systems with emphases on intervention, community relations, public communication, policing, corrections, and societal reaction to offenders and affected communities. The major offers students both soft (e.g., community relations) and hard (e.g., policing) skills relevant to criminal justice, and is aligned with local, regional, state, and national law enforcement agencies. The PSAD degree revolves around three core ideas: applied skills, transdisciplinary pedagogy, and civic engagement. The program promotes lifelong learning among students who develop into justice professionals prepared to ethically lead public and private agencies to make communities safer and promote the equitable application of the law across all boundaries within a multicultural, constitutional democracy.

Responsibilities

  • Syllabus and class preparation: Post a syllabus in the syllabus library for each course taught. Your syllabi must be posted two weeks prior to the start of classes.
  • Instruction during scheduled course times.
  • Course management, currently administered via Moodle.
  • Availability to students for consultation and assistance as needed outside of class.
  • Evaluation of student performance (e.g., grading papers, exams, projects).
  • Regular evaluation of students’ work, including prompt communication of performance on assignments. Retention of student work for university and/or disciplinary accreditation purposes as directed by your chair and dean.
  • Submission of final grades to the Registrar’s Office, which is currently completed via Woodbury University SelfService.
  • Other instructional duties as assigned.
  • Assist in building awareness of the program in the community.
  • Work closely with Admissions to recruit first year and transfer students (especially those from minority and underrepresented communities).
  • Work on student retention.
  • Participate in all PSAD events (on and off campus).
  • Coordinate with University Marketing to produce ancillary recruitment materials and drive traffic to the PSAD website.
  • Assist in external fundraising for the program and help coordinate the Public Safety Administration Advisory Council (PSAAC).
  • Student advising.
  • Curriculum design and program reviews.
  • Work with students in securing professional positions and internships.
  • Maintain a qualified pool of instructors for rotation through the program.
  • Coordinate with Center for Leadership, Equity, and Diversity initiatives.
  • Undertake special projects of value to the department and reflecting the interests of the position holder.
  • Other non-instructional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Applicants should demonstrate a strong professional background in community relations, private security, or law enforcement.
  • Should demonstrate capabilities in interdisciplinary endeavors.
  • Successful candidates are expected to have a Masters’ degree or higher and the ideal candidate will have two years teaching experience teaching at an accredited college or university.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in curriculum design, administrative operations, public relations and fundraising.
  • Experience managing class rosters, attendance, timely grading of assignments.
  • Able to provide critical, informed, and creative feedback to students.
  • All full-time faculty shall be expected to hold at least a Master's degree or a terminal degree appropriate for the field in which they will be teaching. A few exceptions to the degree requirement may be made to obtain the expertise of some specialists or persons with outstanding backgrounds.
