The School of Education (SOE) at Johns Hopkins University (https://education.jhu.edu) is ranked as one of the nation’s top schools of education. JHU School of Education serves 2300 students across a diverse mix of graduate degree programs, including a large number of online academic programs. The SOE is one of the most research-intensive units of its type, with research expenditures regularly exceeding $23M annually. The School is home to six research centers and institutes, covering areas such as educational policy, early childhood education, student success, and safe schools.

JHU School of Education seeks a creative, mature, and energetic professional to serve as the Assistant Dean for Strategic Initiatives. With responsibility for launching, incubating, and leading key strategic school-wide initiatives, the Assistant Dean will report to the Dean and work closely with the School’s leadership team, including faculty and staff leaders. The Assistant Dean will lead and participate in the planning, communication, and implementation of diverse projects involving students, faculty, alumni, and university partners.


The Assistant Dean is a senior leadership position and serves as a representative of the Dean's office in a variety of settings, including meetings with other JHU administrators and meetings with faculty and student groups. S/he will lead the implementation and planning efforts related to the SOE’s strategic vision, administer programs to maximize internal and external stakeholder engagement, and collect data suitable for the assessment of strategic efforts.

Qualified candidates for this position must possess a graduate degree and a minimum of five years of related experience, including project management, strategic planning, business development, and/or staff management. Candidates must have demonstrated experience promoting and implementing new initiatives in a complex decentralized, mission-oriented organization. A demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for managing multiple projects and activities with varied deadlines is required, as are team-building skills, leadership skills, and a commitment to promoting and sustaining an equitable community. Effective written and oral communication skills are required. Graduate degrees in fields including education, business, and public policy, are preferred, as is experience in or knowledge of the culture and operation of research universities.


Required Qualifications
● Earned Master’s degree

● Five years related experience
● Project management and/or strategic planning experience
● Demonstrated leadership ability
● Experience organizing and managing resources to plan against objectives
● Commitment to promoting equitable work environments
● Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication


Preferred qualifications
● Experience working in higher education
● Terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., J.D.)
● Experience working in a remote/hybrid work environment
● Proficient IT skills including the use of shared and remote working platforms

● Change management and organizational development experience

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
