Position Summary:

We are recruiting for two project archivist positions. One position will focus on processing University Archives collections and is a one year term position. The other position is a two year term position that will focus on processing archival collections related to UW Extension.

Under the supervision of the University Archivist and Head of UW Archives, the Project Processing Archivists will specialize in archival arrangement and description. These positions will work on new and existing collections in a wide variety of formats. The Project Processing Archivists will contribute to an important project to re-process and relocate archival collections to offsite storage.

Those selected for each of these Project Processing Archivist positions must have strong organizational and communication skills and a keen attention to detail. They will work in a highly collaborative work environment, which requires an ability and desire to engage daily in inclusive practices.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree required. MLS or equivalent strongly preferred.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of experience arranging and describing archival collections in a special collections library or archive.
- Demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and one or more years of experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience arranging and describing archival collections in a special collections library or archive.
- Demonstrated commitment to and/or experience in inclusive workplace practices.

Preferred Experience:
- Experience with library and archives systems such as Ex Libris/ALMA, OCLC, ArchivesSpace, and Aeon.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current national data content and structure standards such as MARC, DACS and EAD.
- Familiarity with XML editing tools such as oXygen and the ability to troubleshoot technical workflows.
- Knowledge of preservation and conservation practices for archival materials.
- Experience with public services in an archives or library setting.
- Knowledge and experience cataloging archival materials.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.

Additional Information:

University Archives and Records Management is part of the General Library System and is the primary home for collections documenting UW-Madison's rich history. Its mission is to preserve and promote university history by collecting and providing access to a diverse array of archival materials that have permanent historical value. University Archives is one of four libraries in the division of Special Collections & Archives, along with the Department of Special Collections, the Kohler Art Library, and the Mills Music Library. Located in Steenbock Memorial Library, the Archives? collections span the full history of the university and include faculty papers, administrative and departmental records, student organizational records, and documentation of campus life and culture. We collect and care for a variety of formats including paper correspondence, minutes and reports, photographs, film, audio and video recordings, scrapbooks, and electronic files of permanent historical value. We run a robust Oral History Program, provide records management services, and serve as an educational resource encouraging administrative and scholarly research among students, faculty, staff, and the general public. Our collections include over 33,000 linear feet of paper and published material, 2.5 million photos, over 2,100 oral histories, 4,500 films and videos, 8,500 audio recordings, memorabilia, campus publications and other University records.
