Academic Success Coaching is an interactive process that provides guidance, connection, and support to students to help them thrive as scholars at UW Bothell (UWB). The goal is to help students identify and overcome challenges to create a foundation for success as they transition into and through college.

The Academic Success Coach supports students in all majors by providing holistic support by offering robust referrals to academic advisors, campus counseling services, academic tutoring, and other campus support services. The Coach will specifically target students who need support staying or returning to UWB in order to complete their degree. The ideal candidate will interact regularly with faculty and other support staff to provide strategic coordinated care for students.

Direct Service to Students:
  • This position requires approximately 25 hours of 1:1 student contact per week, though additional coaching hours may be required based on periodic needs.
  • The Academic Success Coach will work with students in multiple ways to help prevent, prepare for, and respond to common obstacles encountered in higher education and provide referrals to support units on campus as needed.
  • In coordination with advisors, staff and faculty, the Academic Success Coach identifies and reaches out to current students as well as those who have recently stopped out who may benefit from academic support with compassion, a strengths-based approach, and culturally responsive competence.
  • Serve as a point of contact and case manager to assist students in navigating processes and systems at UW Bothell.
  • Guide students to maximize their learning experiences and connect students to other campus supports and services as appropriate by providing personalized introductions to campus resources.
  • Help students recognize challenges to their persistence in college and empower them to resolve these challenges.

    Monitoring student progress including data entry, data verification, report building, metric tracking:
  • Maintain records of student progress for partner units participating in student outreach. Data on each appointment with students includes performing administrative management of coaching appointments, recording notes, appointment preparation, appointment follow-up, referrals, responding to early alert notifications from faculty, etc.
  • Use data, tracking and follow-up to identify students at risk of dropping out or not thriving academically as well as students who have recently stopped out. This outreach will consist of interventions to assist students in creating a plan to successfully move forward through graduation.
  • Work closely with the learning centers, advisors, financial aid, counseling services, and other student support staff to coordinate appropriate support services to best meet the academic needs of students.
  • Conduct quality assurance of entered data and work with partners to keep data entry consistent and complete.

    Connect and coordinate across campus units; develop, maintain, and create resources and programming:
  • Play a key role in developing and implementing assessment measures to inform policies and procedures that ensure effective support for students.
  • Overall responsibility for the planning, organizing, and executing of new student programming, including orientations, Welcome Week, and other programs as assigned.
  • Continually analyze student needs and identify programming and resource gaps. This analysis may require gathering, revising and updating current resources to ensure they stay relevant and accurate.
  • Collaborate extensively around campus, particularly with pre-major and program advisors, student services offices, learning centers, and key campus event organizers.
  • This work entails a deep understanding of university systems, identifying appropriate campus resources and programs, and connecting students with this support. This position requires knowledge of the complexities of the university, including rules, policies.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Higher Education Administration or related field, and a minimum 3 years of experience developing and administering higher education student support and retention programs, such as academic success initiatives, academic tutoring, study skills, and other academic assistance.

  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and/or advising with higher education students with non-centered backgrounds: Black students, Indigenous students, students of color, first-generation students, working students, caregiver students, disabled students, LGBTQ students.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Experience working with students struggling academically.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, dependable and reliable.
  • Culturally aware and conscious of diversity issues within student populations.
  • Experience and comfort in using software programs.
  • The ability to create web content, handouts, and other print and digital resources.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

  • Experience with planning and presenting workshops and events for students.
  • Knowledge of UW administrative systems such as EAB Navigate, SDB, EARS, DARS, and BI Portal.
  • Experience and comfort in using software programs such Canvas, Catalyst, Screen capturing software and/or similar applications.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience with higher education culturally responsive coaching, mentoring, and/or advising.

    Conditions of employment:
  • This position requires a flexible schedule and the ability to work some evenings and weekends.
