Staff Psychologist/Intercultural Specialist

Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design is seeking a Staff Psychologist – Intercultural Specialist to join its Office of Counseling and Psychology Services (CAPS). Emotional well-being is essential to personal development and integral to the creative process. CAPS offers objective and non-judgmental individual counseling and resources to support students’ educational journey at RISD. In this office, students find a range of mental health services to help students improve emotional, interpersonal, and academic functioning.

Under the Director of CAPS, the Staff Psychologist - Intercultural Specialist provides clinical, educational, outreach, and consultation services specifically relevant to the needs of racial and ethnic minority students, in addition to generalist responsibilities. Services include psychological intervention, prevention, and postvention programs and services to the college community, primarily to students. This position provides programs and services that address cultural issues and identity development, serious mental health issues, as well as problems that are developmental and preventative in nature. This position provides clinical services such as initial assessment, individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, and case disposition; serves as a clinical supervisor and trainer for graduate trainees; develops, implements, and evaluates educational and prevention outreach programs; provides consultation to faculty, staff, students, parents/families, and other mental health/health care providers; and participates in department and college meetings and committees. Successful candidates have experience with cultural concerns, identity development, and serious mental health issues relevant to college students.

Essential Functions

• Provides counseling services in the form of individual, group, and couples counseling; initial assessments; crisis appointments
• Using RISD’s EMR system, prepares documentation of services provided
• Ensures record-keeping and clinical services are in regulatory and ethical compliance and meet accreditation standards
• Develops, coordinates, and delivers multicultural outreach programs, services, training, and professional development on behalf of Counseling Services
• Collaborate with campus partners to create and align opportunities that deepen the awareness and ensure the inclusion of minoritized populations
• Evaluate the effectiveness of services, outreach, and training in issues of diversity, identity, and inclusion
• Participates in case conferences, psychiatric case conferences, and staff meetings in Counseling Services
• Provides training and clinical supervision for Counseling Services' trainees.
• Serves in the on-call (after hours and weekend) coverage rotation

Knowledge/Skills/Experience

• Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in counseling, psychology, or a related field. Licensed or license eligible in the State of Rhode Island as a Psychologist (must be able to file for license within 3 months of hire)
• Three plus years post-graduate experience and demonstrated knowledge and experience working with people from marginalized groups and the issues they face as they navigate within dominant culture(s) and between cultures required.
• Demonstrated competency providing clinical services for diverse clients, including international populations and clients along the gender and sexual orientation spectra
• Demonstrated experience providing clinical services for the wide range of presenting issues seen in college students, including assessing and managing risk and the treatment of serious concerns (e.g., eating disorders, prodromal symptomatology)
• Appreciation and knowledge of intersecting identities, the process of identity development (intersectional identity development), and how this varies between individuals
• Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver multicultural outreach programs, services, training, and professional development
• Demonstrated ability to actively engage in clinical practice with students in ongoing counseling (with individuals, couples, groups), in crisis intervention, and in outreach programs
• Ability to manage a very full caseload within a time-limited clinical setting
• Experience in the use of electronic/medical records systems; must be computer literate
• In-depth knowledge of college student development theories and practice
• Ability to work with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds
• Highly effective interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Awareness and commitment to a developmental clinical and training model

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in a college or university counseling center
• Familiarity with a variety of cultures (both international and domestic)
• Training or experience with issues such as racial fatigue, code-switching, and impostor syndrome
• Clinical experience working with international, immigrant, and/or refugee populations
• Passion for and commitment to social justice
• Experience providing training and supervision in an APA-accredited training program
• Strong outreach and consultation skills
• Experience providing process group therapy
• Fluency in multiple languages
