The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine (UTRGV SOM) established in 2015 is located in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, a region known for its rich culture and growing urban environment. UTRGV is predominantly a Hispanic-serving Institution with a very diverse student body, in addition to a diverse faculty who are committed to working in a multicultural environment and dedicated to student success. The Department of Pharmacology at the UTRGV SOM is located in Edinburg, TX, and seeks to fill one open position with a highly qualified faculty member to teach primarily within the pre-clerkship curricular years of the MD program. The position is a full-time, non-tenure track, 12-month appointment, with renewal of appointment on an annual basis contingent on satisfactory performance and budgetary availability. Candidates should possess a Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D., or equivalent and should have demonstrable expertise in Pharmacology, especially in its teaching as a basic science discipline. Additionally, the desire and flexibility to integrate instruction across other disciplines within a fully integrated curriculum, along with the ability to work collegially within an interdisciplinary team of other clinical/basic science educators would be considered an asset. All candidates with an enthusiasm for teaching and those with prior teaching experience in a health profession related environment are encouraged to apply; however, prior teaching experience in an LCME-accredited medical school would be considered extremely desirable. This position has a full-time instructional mandate and the recruited candidate must be committed to excellence in the teaching and mentoring of first- and second-year medical students, in addition to teaching within other graduate programs offered by the School of Medicine. The present MD curriculum at the school is of a hybrid nature, designed around the Problem Based Learning (PBL) modality, while also employing traditional lecture-based instruction. All instructional faculty teaching within the pre-clerkship curricular years are expected to provide lecture-based instruction, facilitate small group PBL sessions, in addition to performing other assigned co-curricular and administrative duties such as serving as course/module leads etc. While the primary responsibility of this position is to serve as an educator, all instructional faculty are encouraged to pursue scholarly activities, especially those that may be related to medical education. All faculty members within the School of Medicine are expected to contribute via their participation in school/university committees and other service-related activities.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to
demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based
test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the
