Director of Research Development

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
Research is a high-profile area of growth within the university, nearly tripling in funding in the past decade to $125M university wide, with a 5-year goal of $200M. The Khoury College of Computer Sciences is critical to this effort, as it represents one of the fastest growing units in the university. The Director of Research Development works with the Associate Dean for Research and other members of the college leadership team to provide guidance and support for both the overall college research program, select large-scale research initiatives, and advancing the reputation, impact and external profile of Khoury research nationally and internationally.

Specific areas of focus include, but are not limited to:

1. Strategic planning to facilitate faculty pursuit of research grants, including promotion of research opportunities and streamlining of the grant application process;

2. Creation of faculty professional development programs, including group trainings and one-on-one coaching for enhanced faculty capability;

3. Support (both strategic and tactical) of internal funding programs and large-scale internal/external research initiatives that are potential “game-changers” for the College's reputation and research level.

4. Tracking of research impact and products, and support efforts to promote and maximize research impact internally and externally.

The Director uses their knowledge of the academic enterprise, the current research funding environment, faculty expertise areas in the college and university, and development and advancement priorities to envision and develop programs, pre-proposals/proposals, white papers, and other research communications that enhance the Khoury research environment. The Director draws on their superb organizational and interpersonal skills, creative and professional writing and presentation abilities, and a strong interest in cutting edge engineering and technology topics to bring teams together as needed for synergistic activities and projects.

Master's degree required with 8+ years of research development experience in a higher education setting. | Experience planning, organizing, and writing grant proposals for NSF, DoD, NIH, and/or foundations. | Highest level English writing and editing skill, with the demonstrated ability to write on technical and other topics and translate research for a range of audiences, using correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, editing, formatting, and proofreading. | Outstanding information visualization skills, to conceive of and design images that convey key programmatic messages. | Demonstrated success in using analytical, judgment and problem-solving skills to determine needs and arrive at consistently sound conclusions. | Demonstrated research, data gathering and interview skills to compose effective written materials. | Organizational experience, preferably organizing teams of faculty as well as skill in implementing systems in a large, bureaucratic, multi-department environment. | Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite
