General summary/purpose:

The Discovery and Content Management Librarianis responsible for creating metadata for integrating resources, eresources, serials, and nonbook formats in the libraries’ collections as well as providing leadership and expertisein providing intellectual, virtual, and physical access to the collections and re-envisioning bibliographic services and access.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  • Manage eresources batch loads and edit MARC records and proxy information
  • Create and maintain metadata to facilitate access to integrating resources, eresources, serials, and nonbook formats (including microforms, DVDs) acquired for the Libraries collections
  • Utilize RDA, Library of Congress classification, LC subject headings, and rule interpretations, and apply other standards when appropriate
  • Collaborate with other JHU libraries through the Electronic Resource Discovery Team to ensure electronic resources are discoverable by JHU patrons
  • Assist with evaluation, testing, and loading commercial bibliographic records into the online catalog
  • Provide improved access to open access resources
  • Provide expertise and develop strategies for integrating access to locally digitized and commercial electronic resources through the online catalog and other discovery interfaces
  • Assist in harvesting and translating data between systems
  • Manages the departmental statistics sheets that are used for tracking individual progress as well as compiling data for external reporting
  • Instruct and train staff and student assistants in applying appropriate standards and integrating these into workflows
  • Provide leadership and technical expertise in the investigation and application of new methods for organization of information resources utilizing established and emerging bibliographic control mechanisms and standards
  • Collaborate with other technical services staff in developing and implementing policies, best practices, procedures, and workflows
  • Share responsibility for authority control
  • Participate in special projects as needed
  • Professionally engaged with local, regional, and/or national groups/associations

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or an advanced related degree
  • Three years professional library experience. Experience cataloging serials, eresources, and/or integrating resources.
  • Working knowledge of current and emerging national cataloging and metadata standards.
  • Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail.
  • Strong commitment to enhancing service through teamwork and responsiveness to clients.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of authority control practices.
  • Reading knowledge of at least one Western European language.
  • Experience with OCLC and an integrated library system.
  • Ability to prioritize work to ensure that departmental and library goals are realized.
  • Potential to excel in a dynamic academic library environment, demonstrating flexibility, initiative and creativity.
  • Commitment to professional development and growth.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with non-MARC metadata schemes (e.g.,Dublin Core, METS, EAD, VRA).Knowledge of XML, XSLT, MARC Edit, knowledge management procedures and techniques.
  • Project management experience.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
